Is Jared Goff Top 5 NFL Quarterback?
The Detroit Lions are banking on quarterback Jared Goff to build upon one of the most successful seasons of his NFL career.
Ahead of the 2023 season, pundits have started to rank the 32 starting quarterbacks and power rank the top signal-callers the league has to offer.
Despite his success in Ben Johnson's offense, Goff is still not viewed as being among the top five quarterbacks to line up under center.
Patrick Mahomes continues to hold the top spot among pundits, while Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert and Aaron Rodgers continue to garner league-wide respect in quarterback rankings.
Let's explore what has been recently said about Goff, as the NFL enters phase three of the offseason schedule.
In a recent PFF ranking of 32 quarterbacks, Goff came in at No. 16.
"Goff is in an outstanding offense with one of the best coordinators in football running the show. Depending on the numbers you look at, his stats will make him look like one of the best passers in football, but it’s clear to anybody with a critical eye that that doesn’t quite match reality. Goff ranked 19th last season in PFF passing grade and 30th in big-time throw rate. He is a solid quarterback for the offense he’s in but is not as good as some of the results would suggest."
In a power ranking of NFC quarterbacks, the Sporting News has Goff ranked ninth, behind Jalen Hurts, Kirk Cousins, Derek Carr and even Matthew Stafford.
"Goff revved up in Year 2 in Detroit, showing the arm, decision-making and efficiency that defined his early breakout years with the Rams. He has thrived in Ben Johnson's offense supported by a terrific line and diverse weaponry. Goff remains one of the league's most dependent passers, but the Lions have been smart to play to this strengths and providing him with a high-floor rushing attack. He just needs to get more consistent to play as well outside of Ford Field."
NFL analyst Bucky Brooks expressed that the 28-year-old is entering a make-or-break 2023 season.
As Brooks explained, "Defensive coordinators were not able to counter Goff's ability to operate like a pass-first point guard running a fast break from the pocket. The veteran has two years remaining on his current contract, but the Lions could conceivably move on from the veteran sooner than that, since he's owed no more guaranteed money after this season, per Over The Cap. They did also just draft a quarterback (Hendon Hooker)."
