GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers don’t have to release an injury report until Sept. 6, which is the Wednesday before Week 1 against the Chicago Bears.

“You want the injury report?” coach Matt LaFleur said after Wednesday’s practice.

He wasn’t about to provide it.

What was evident during the media viewing portion was five players did not practice: receivers Romeo Doubs (hamstring) and Dontayvion Wicks (hamstring), left tackle David Bakhtiari (knee/precautionary), offensive tackle Luke Tenuta (ankle) and linebacker De’Vondre Campbell (ankle).

LaFleur wasn’t going to talk about Doubs’ hamstring. Nor, really, was Doubs, who was coached up on the proper way of addressing injury questions a week-and-a-half before the first game.

“Everything’s fine. I’ll leave those answers up to coach, however, just taking everything day by day,” said Doubs, who didn’t do anything beyond the opening stretch.

LaFleur did say star outside linebacker Rashan Gary will be on a “pitch count” for Week 1, despite a strong first week of live practices last week.

“We’re going to be smart with him, knowing that this is a marathon, and working with our athletic training staff in terms of just how much volume we want to give him,” LaFleur said. “He’s another guy who attacks it the same way every day. He’s going to go 100 miles an hour, and sometimes we have to pull him back because he’s going to keep going. He’s one of our dogs and one of the lead dogs and you can’t have enough guys like him.”

During the media portion, Wicks was going hard through a rehab workout. Campbell, the 2021 All-Pro, worked with a trainer on the side, as well. The expectation is he will be ready for Week 1.

While the transactions weren’t announced by the Packers, Tenuta is off to injured reserve. His spot on the roster will be taken by long snapper Matt Orzech, who was on his way to practice as reporters were leaving. Orzech was released on Tuesday in a procedural move that allowed the Packers to keep Tenuta for a day rather than placing him on season-ending injured reserve on Tuesday.

Why jump through the hoops for Tenuta, a sixth-round pick last year by Buffalo who was released by the Bills and Colts barely a month into his rookie season?

“He’s big, first of all,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said. “He’s really smart, he’s tough. We think he’s got a pretty good upside to him. I’ve talked to you guys about this before: Especially once you get into the season, it’s hard to find big guys that can play. And we think he’s a big guy who can play. So, we’d like to continue to develop him.”

Receiver Bo Melton returned to practice. He missed the end of camp with a hamstring injury, was released on Tuesday and signed to the practice squad on Wednesday.
