Packers Playing Late and Early (and on Holidays)

This marks the 10th consecutive season in which the Packers were awarded five primetime games. Their national appeal, annual status as Super Bowl contenders and the presence of Aaron Rodgers guaranteed tremendous ratings in the marquee games played on Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights.

The curiosity factor with Love means more of the same, though the networks hedged their bets. Three of their primetime games are scheduled for December – including New Year’s Eve at the Minnesota Vikings – and are subject to the NFL’s flexible scheduling.

There are nine early games on the docket, including Thanksgiving at Detroit and Christmas Eve at the Carolina Panthers, compared to five last year.

A couple factors weigh in the Packers’ favor as they attempt to rebound from last year’s 8-9 finish with Rodgers.

One, the schedule does not seem particularly daunting. By 2022 winning percentage, Green Bay will face the 24th-ranked schedule, with its 17 opponents having a combined winning percentage of .476 last year. Four games will be played against teams that won at least 10 games while eight games will be played against teams that lost 10-plus games.

Even accounting for year-to-year improvement based on free agency and the draft, 10 of their 17 games will come against teams ranked 20th or worse in Sports Illustrated’s power rankings. Eight games will be played against teams ranked 20th or worse in the latest Super Bowl odds.

Two, eight of their 17 games will come against teams ranked 20th or worse in points allowed last season compared to only two that finished in the top 10, meaning perhaps an easier breaking-in period for Love.
