Here Are Packers’ 11 Picks for 2024 NFL Draft And Their History
GREEN BAY, Wis. – The NFL awarded three free-agent compensatory picks to the Green Bay Packers on Friday, giving them the expected 11 total selections for next month’s draft.
Here are those selections along with a brief history lesson illustrating what type of player the Packers can expect to land at those spots.
Round 1, Pick No. 25 Overall
History: The history of this pick is tremendous and terrible all at once. The last four were Bills tight end Dalton Kincaid, Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum, Jaguars running back Travis Etienne and 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk – terrific players one and all. Other than Boyd Dowler, the Packers’ history is dismal. Rather incredibly, no Hall of Famers have come from this slot.
Round 2, Pick 9 of Round, No. 41 Overall
(From Jets in Aaron Rodgers trade)
History: Hall of Famers Pete Phlos and Andre Tippett are among 14 Pro Bowlers. Last year’s pick. B.J. Ojulari, had four sacks off the bench for the Cardinals. Interested in a running back? The Seahawks took Kenneth Walker in 2022, the Colts took Jonathan Taylor in 2000 and the Vikings took Dalvin Cook in 2017. The Packers have held this slot 13 times, with receiver Robert Ferguson (2001) the most recent and linebacker Johnny Holland (1987) the best.
Round 2, Pick 26 of Round, No. 58 Overall
History lesson: This slot has provided 11 Pro Bowlers, most notably Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau, who recorded 62 career interceptions. Dallas took tight end Luke Schoonmaker last year, who caught eight passes. Linebacker Nick Bolton, guard Ezra Cleveland, center Ethan Pocic and star linebacker Lavonte Davis were the best among the most recent. The Packers have held this slot five times, with receiver Terrence Murphy (2005) the most recent and defensive lineman Matt Brock (1989) the best.
Round 3, Pick 25 of Round, No. 88 Overall
History lesson: This slot has provided 13 Pro Bowlers, including receiver Bob “Bullet” Hayes, who is the lone Hall of Famer. The last three years were relative duds – running back Tank Bigsby, receiver Jalen Tolbert and running back Trey Sermon – but the Vikings grabbed star pass rusher Danielle Hunter in 2015. The Packers have picked at this slot four times, including linebacker Oren Burks in 2018 and outside linebacker Kyler Fackrell in 2016, as well as five-year starting safety Steve Luke in 1975.
Round 3, Pick 28 of Round, No. 91 Overall
(From Bills in Rasul Douglas trade)
History lesson: This slot has provided eight Pro Bowlers – but none since linebacker NaVorro Bowman in 2010 – and no Hall of Famers. Last year, Buffalo grabbed linebacker Dorian Williams, who had two starts and 40 tackles. The Buccaneers landed running back Rachaad White in 2022, and guard Trey Pipkins (2019) and safety John Johnson (2017) have been regular starters, too. Green Bay’s only pick at this spot was tight end Jermichael Finley in 2008.
Packers Awarded Three Compensatory Picks
Round 4, Pick 26 of Round, No. 125 Overall
History lesson: Five Pro Bowlers have come from this slot, led by Hall of Famer Mike Webster in 1974. The last was offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod in 2007. The Chargers selected receiver Derius Davis last year; he caught 15 passes for just 66 yards. Defensive backs Camryn Bynum (2021) and Avonte Maddox (2018) and pass rusher Samon Ebukam (2017) have been recent starters. The Packers have picked five times from this spot, most recently running back Johnathan Franklin in 2013 and most notably linebackers Brady Poppinga in 2005 and Brian Noble in 1985.
Round 5, Pick 24 of Round, No. 168 Overall
(Compensatory pick for Allen Lazard)
History lesson: Three Pro Bowlers have come from this slot, with defensive back Corey Graham (2007) the most recent. Offensive tackles Braxton Jones (2022) and Rick Wagner (2013) were by far the best picks over the last decade. Linebacker Owen Pappoe started one game for Arizona last year. Green Bay’s two picks, receiver Dave Davis (1971) and guard Ralph Wenzel (1966), you’ve likely never heard of; Wenzel opted for the AFL.
Round 6, Pick 26 of Round, No. 201 Overall
History lesson: The Packers have never picked from this spot. Overall, three Pro Bowlers have been taken here, including former Falcons star running back Jamal Anderson, who had four 1,000-yard seasons. The best player might have been guard Ray Brown (1986), a 205-game starter. Last year’s pick, Texans center Jarrett Patterson, was an instant starter.
Round 6, Pick 44 of Round, No. 219 Overall
(Compensatory pick for Jarran Reed)
History lesson: The Packers haven’t picked from this spot, either. Five Pro Bowlers have been taken here but none since quarterback Elvis Grbac was taken in 1993. Only three No. 219s played in a game last season, though one of them was Ravens safety Geno Stone, who led the NFL in interceptions and will be a top free agent at the position. Last year’s pick, Lions receiver Antoine Green, caught one pass.
Round 7, Pick 25 of Round, No. 245 Overall
History lesson: Green Bay has picked here twice, with cornerback Chris Johnson in 2003 and linebacker Jim Gueno in 1976. The lone Pro Bowler was linebacker Chris Hanburger, a Hall of Famer and nine-time all-star. It’s more miss than hit at this point in the draft; only two No. 245 picks were active in the league last year, though 2018 pick Will Clapp started 11 games at center for the Chargers last year. Last year’s pick, Patriots cornerback Isaiah Bolden, suffered a neck injury in a preseason game against the Packers and missed the season.
Round 7, Pick 35 of Round, No. 255 Overall
(Compensatory pick for Dean Lowry)
History lesson: Only one Pro Bowler has come from this spot – Packers quarterback Don Majkowski, who was picked in 1987 and started 57 games. He was the only Packers pick. Linebacker Tae Crowder (2020) started 31 games. After him, none of the last three started a game. Before him, none of the previous four even made a roster. Last year’s pick, linebacker Jalen Graham, had one tackle in four games for the 49ers.
