In this story:

GREEN BAY, Wis. – From a national perspective, new Green Bay Packers starting quarterback Jordan Love won’t be burdened by outsized expectations.

Actually, expectations are shrinking.

When FanDuel Sportsbook posted over/unders for passing yards in May, Love’s was set at 3,400.5 yards. In updated odds at FanDuel, Love’s total has fallen to 3,325.5 yards. Furthermore, the over/under on touchdown passes has dipped from 22.5 to 21.5.

When Rodgers replaced Brett Favre in 2008, he finished fourth in the NFL with 4,038 passing yards, fourth with 28 touchdowns and sixth with a 93.8 passer rating. That was during a 16-game season and while he played through an injured throwing shoulder.

While Love will benefit from a 17-game season, he won’t have the benefit of the established receiver corps that Rodgers inherited. Rodgers’ group was headlined by Donald Driver, who was coming off his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard season and second consecutive Pro Bowl campaign, and Greg Jennings, who was coming off a Year 2 of 920 yards and 12 touchdowns in just 13 games.

If Love hits his the FanDuel projections on the nose, he would finish the season 15th in passing yards and passing touchdowns.

On a per-game basis, Love’s projections equate to 195.6 yards and 1.26 touchdowns. Rodgers, in the worst full statistical season of his career, threw for 3,695 yards and 26 touchdowns – per-game averages of 217.4 yards and 1.53 touchdowns – in 2022.

The 2023 schedule provides optimism. Here are the 17 games with those teams’ opponent passer ratings in 2022.

Chicago Bears: 26th

Atlanta Falcons: 29th

New Orleans Saints: 9th

Detroit Lions: 25th

Las Vegas Raiders: 32nd

Bye Week

Denver Broncos: 7th

Minnesota Vikings: 21st

Los Angeles Rams: 20th

Los Angeles Chargers: 14th

Pittsburgh Steelers: 12th

Detroit Lions: 25th

Kansas City Chiefs: 27th

New York Giants: 18th

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 22nd

Carolina Panthers: 24th

Minnesota Vikings: 21st

Chicago Bears: 26th

That’s 12 of 17 games against teams that ranked 20th or worse in opponent passer ratings.

Love remains +3500 to win MVP at FanDuel, the 15th-shortest odds.
