Packers Tight End Makes Schrager's Top Rookie List
Luke Musgrave has been making some waves since the Green Bay Packers drafted him in the second round.
Late last week, Bill Huber said there had not been a rookie that has shown more promise since the start of the offseason program than Musgrave.
The Packers have not typically started rookies immediately under Matt LaFleur.
Darnell Savage, Josh Myers, and Quay Walker were the only players asked to start on the first day of training camp. Musgrave was added to that list this offseason.
He looks to be a player the Packers have big plans for. They've lined him up in the slot. They've used him on the line of scrimmage. They've also lined him up on the boundary of the formation to try and exploit the matchup problems that a player with Musgrave's size and speed can cause.
That buzz for Musgrave is going to continue to grow, thanks to an appearance on a list from NFL Network's Peter Schrager.
On this morning's edition of Good Morning Football Schrager made a list of the top-5 rookies garnering the most buzz from what he's noticed out of training camp.
Musgrave checked in at third on the list with Schrager saying the amount of love that Musgrave has received as being "out of control."
As has been noted here, rookie tight ends typically do not have a high level of production in their first season. The learning curve in the NFL is steep. That's especially true at a position where they have to know all of the run game in addition to the route tree.
“One of the things we talk about all the time, the best part about playing tight end is you get to do everything on the field besides throw the ball,” tight ends coach John Dunn said before the start of the offseason program.
The Packers will have no choice but to give their rookie tight ends opportunities. Both Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis are in Chicago now. Tyler Davis is the only other true tight end on the roster with Josiah Deguara assuming a fullback/H-Back role in the offense.
Their hope is Musgrave's talent will shine through. He's put in the work this offseason, attending tight end university with his draft classmate, Tucker Kraft.
The buzz is gaining steam, and now Musgrave will have a chance to add to it when he steps on the field for his first professional game on Friday night.
