Rodgers’ Next-Team Odds Swing to Jets
GREEN BAY, Wis. – The New York Jets are the new betting favorite to land Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
The oddsmakers at BetOnline.ag and SportsBetting.ag posted a major shift in the next-team odds on Tuesday morning. With the news that Rodgers and the Jets have spoken and Rodgers “is open” to going to the Big Apple, the Jets’ odds shortened to -125. The Las Vegas Raiders, who had been the favorite since Davante Adams made his public push for Rodgers at the Pro Bowl, are -120.
By implied probability, it’s practically a coin flip – 55.6 percent for the Jets and 54.6 percent for the Raiders.
(Note: As of midday Tuesday, the bet no longer was available.)
The Packers are not an option; the bet voids if Rodgers returns to the team or retires.
On Feb. 8, the Raiders were -300 and the Jets were +200. On Monday, the Raiders were -200 and the Jets were +140.
The odds notwithstanding, the Jets have been the logical landing spot all along.
First and foremost, they’re good. Their defense finished fourth in points allowed last season, so Rodgers wouldn’t have to do it alone. With NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson, he’d inherit a No. 1 receiver. With receivers Corey Davis and Elijah Moore and running back Breece Hall, the offense is filled with potential.
Second was the hiring of Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator. Together from 2019 through 2021, the Packers won 13 games all three seasons and Rodgers won MVP honors in 2020 and 2021. Hackett would provide a fun and familiar face and the schematic fit would be seamless.
“There’s nobody in the building that brings me more joy or is more fun to be around than Nathaniel Hackett,” Rodgers said before the 2020 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, where Hackett had worked previously.
“I just knew Hack and I were going to bond. He’s become such a close confidant and friend besides a fantastic coach. I just really, really can’t express enough how important he is to our team in so many ways. He’s incredible in front of the room. He brings a lot of great energy that’s really important to meetings that … maybe get long at times. Never feels that way with him in front of the room.
“Hack has been a really important part of our culture change and a part of our success on offense. I love him. Hope he doesn’t go anywhere. Unless I do.”
At the Scouting Combine, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst signaled a willingness to trade the four-time MVP and proceed with Jordan Love, saying “all options” were on the table.
Even if Rodgers hasn’t talked to Gutekunst, there’s no doubt Rodgers can sense where he stands in the organization, which has shifted from a $150 million commitment to open to a trade in less than 12 months. In that light, the Jets’ interest would have to be appealing. Who doesn’t want to feel wanted?
At FanDuel Sportsbook, the Jets and Packers had been +2500 to win the Super Bowl. With the Rodgers-Jets news, New York moved to +1800 but Green Bay stayed at +2500. In another update at midday Tuesday, the Jets shortened to +1600 while the Packers were unchanged.
Rodgers is +1600 to win MVP at FanDuel. Love, despite having only one NFL start, is +3000. Those odds are shorter than for Russell Wilson (+4000), Derek Carr (+4000), Matthew Stafford (+5000) and Kirk Cousins (+5000), among others.
