Ultimate All-Time Packers Mock Draft
GREEN BAY, Wis. – With the addition of two compensatory draft picks, the Green Bay Packers are scheduled to have 10 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.
With the NFL releasing the full seven-round draft order on Friday, here are the best picks at each of those draft slots. Call it the All-Time Packers Mock Draft.
First Round: No. 15
Two Hall of Famers have come from this slot: Packers running back Jim Taylor, the 1962 NFL MVP and NFL rushing leader, and Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Alan Page. Unofficially, Page is No. 8 on the NFL’s all-time sacks list with 148.5.
In more recent times, linebacker Ryan Shazier (Steelers, 2014) and running back Melvin Gordon (Broncos, 2015) were two-time Pro Bowlers selected over the last decade. Offensive tackle Kolton Miller (Raiders, 2018) is a five-year starter and receiver Jerry Jeudy (Broncos, 2020) just missed his first 1,000-yard season.
Page, Albert Haynesworth and Jason Pierre-Paul would lead a formidable defensive front.
Green Bay has had the 15th pick six times, most recently linebacker Wayne Simmons in 1993. Receiver Billy Howton was one of the stars of the 1952 draft. He’s one of the 11 All-Pros.
The pick: With apologies to bruising Taylor, we’ll take Page.
Second Round: No. 45
Linebacker Eric Kendricks (2015), who was released this week by the Vikings, and Titans running back Derrick Henry (2016) highlight the last decade of drafts. Both had an All-Pro season and Henry is a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time rushing champion. The Bucs got safety Antoine Winfield at this spot in 2020.
Receiver Alshon Jeffery (Bears, 2012) and guard Zane Beadles (Broncos, 2010) were longtime starters of semi-recent vintage, too.
Tight end Dave Casper is the lone Hall of Famer selected at No. 45. Led by Casper’s four, nine players were All-Pros. Running back Ricky Watters (49ers, 1992) joined Casper as five-time Pro Bowlers.
The Packers have had this pick twice: cornerback Josh Jackson, a bust, in 2018 and defensive tackle Fred Heron, who started 57 games in seven seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals, in 1966.
The pick: Casper.
Third Round: No. 78
There’s been a bit of a slump. Of the last six players taken at this spot, only center Matt Hennessy (Falcons, 2020) and guard Michael Deiter (Dolphins, 2019) have been full-time starters. They were for one season apiece and not in 2022. However, in the 12 seasons spanning guard linebacker Kirk Morrison (Raiders) in 2005 and Joe Thuney (Patriots) in 2016, there have been eight multi-season starters.
Vasquez is the most recent of eight All-Pros. Two guards, Gene Hickerson (Browns, 1957) and Danny Fortman (Bears, 1936) are Hall of Famers.
The Packers have picked from No. 78 three times, most recently and most notably picking receiver James Jones in 2007.
The pick: Thuney.
Fourth Round: No. 116
Defensive tackle Rodney Gunter (Cardinals, 2015) defensive end Carl Lawson (Bengals, 2017) and safety Amani Hooker (Titans, 2019) have been multi-season starters taken in recent years. Linebacker Zak DeOssie (Giants, 2007) was a two-time Pro Bowler based on special teams.
Guard John Niland (Raiders, 1966) is the only All-Pro taken from this slot, earning the honor three times as a nine-year starter. He earned six consecutive Pro Bowl honors from 1968 through 1973. Everybody else taken 116th has combined for nine Pro Bowl accolades.
Green Bay has picked from this slot 10 times, led by linebacker Mike Douglass (1978) as a seven-year starter. The last time was 1988. Linebacker Darrell Reed, an All-American at Oklahoma, didn’t play in a single game.
The pick: Niland.
Fifth Round: No. 149
This has been a fruitful spot. Kicker Evan McPherson (Bengals, 2021) and punter Michael Dickson (Seahawks, 2018) are two of the best specialists in the business. Defensive back Demontae Kazee (Falcons, 2017), running back Jay Ajayi (Dolphins, 2015) and offensive linemen Kevin Pamphile (Buccaneers, 2014) and Johnnie Troutman (Chargers, 2013) were multi-season starters taken over the last decade.
Dickson is the only All-Pro taken here. Tight end Elbie Nickel (Steelers, 1947) leads the way as a three-time Pro Bowler and was the Steelers’ career leader in receptions by a tight end until he was passed by Heath Miller. There are a total of seven Pro Bowlers, including Green Bay’s Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and Dorsey Levens, who were selected in 2000 and 1994, respectively. They were by far the most accomplished of Green Bay’s nine picks at No. 149.
The pick: Nickel.
Fifth Round: No. 170
Defensive tackle Broderick Washington (Ravens, 2020), cornerback Darius Phillips (Bengals, 2018) and running back Vick Ballard (Colts, 2012) were one-year starters taken over the last 11 drafts.
Running back Travis Jervey (1995) was one of Green Bay’s two picks at No. 170 and one of the four Pro Bowlers. Defensive back Mike Nelms (Bills, 1980) and defensive end Norm Willey (Eagles, 1950) were the only All-Pros. Defensive tackle Michael McCrary (Seahawks, 1993) had 48.5 sacks over a four-season span.
The pick: McCrary.
Seventh Round: No. 232
There hasn’t been a starter taken at this spot since the Packers took linebacker Sam Barrington in 2013. Injuries cut short a promising career.
That doesn’t mean you can’t find a real gem. Receiver Raymond Berry (Colts, 1954) was a three-time All-Pro, six-time Pro Bowler and Hall of Famer who led the NFL in receptions three times, yards three times and touchdowns twice. His 108.2 yards per game in 1960 ranks 17th all-time. Defensive back Pat Fischer (Cardinals, 1961) was a three-time Pro Bowler with 56 interceptions in 17 seasons. Julian Edelman (Patriots, 2009) was one of Tom Brady’s go-to receivers.
Barrington was one of three Packers taken 232nd; defensive tackle James Looney (2018) played in three games.
The pick: Berry.
Seventh Round: No. 235
Punter Mike Horan (Falcons, 1982) is the only All-Pro but there have been some real standouts. In 2018, the Colts selected linebacker Zaire Franklin, who ranked among the NFL leaders with 167 tackles in 2022. Defensive tackle Shelby Harris (Raiders, 2014) has been a starter the past four seasons and has 24.5 career sacks. His 64 career starts rank third all-time. Defensive back Mike Zordich (Chargers, 1986) leads with 127 starts.
The Packers have picked 235th only once; tight end John Thompson (1979) caught two passes in four seasons.
The pick: Franklin.
Seventh Round: No. 242
Defensive end Brett Keisel (Steelers, 2002) and running back Woody Campbell (Oilers, 1967) were one-time Pro Bowlers. Keisel had staying power, though, with 114 starts over his 13 seasons. He had 30 sacks.
Green Bay has picked four times from 242, including outside linebacker Jonathan Garvin in 2020. Offensive tackle Keith Wortman (1972) started 49 games in 10 seasons.
The pick: Keisel.
Seventh Round: No. 256
There’s never been an All-Pro or Pro Bowler taken here. In fact, only four regular starters have been taken at this spot, led by four-year starting center Wayne Frazier (Chargers, 1972). Kicker Ryan Succop’s 216 games are 166 more than anyone else. Drafted by the Chiefs in 2009, he is 32nd all-time in scoring.
The Packers took running back Kylin Hill in 2021, receiver Carl Ford in 2003, quarterback Bud Keyes in 1988, running back Larry Key in 1978 and back Ed Holtsinger in 1946. They combined for zero starts.
The pick: Succop.
