What You Need to Know About Packers vs. Broncos
Referee: Alex Kemp. Kemp’s first year as a referee was 2018. While the home team is 2-4 in his six games this season, the visitors have been the more-penalized team in each of his seasons. This year, his crew has thrown 2.6 more penalties for 12.7 more penalty yards than the league averages.
Betting line: Packers by 1.5 points with an over/under of 45 points at FanDuel Sportsbook. That was the line at the start of the week. As of Thursday morning, 60 percent of the money is on Green Bay.
History lesson: The Packers lead the regular-season series 7-6-1. While Green Bay has won four of the last five overall, its only win in Denver came in 2007. At the start of overtime, Brett Favre threw an 82-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings. It was Favre’s second touchdown of the game; the first was a 79-yarder to James Jones.
Coaches: Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur is in his fifth season and has a career record of 49-22. He is 1-0 vs. Denver. This will be LaFleur’s third try at win No. 50. Denver’s Sean Payton is in his first season with the Broncos. In 16 seasons overall, he’s 153-94. Payton is 5-2 against the Packers and 1-1 against LaFleur.
In the rankings: Green Bay on offense ranks 13th in points per game (22.6), 22nd in passing per play (6.17) and 25th in rushing per play (3.52). On defense, it ranks 22nd in points per game (22.6), ninth in passing per play (6.00) and 20th in rushing per play (4.27). Green Bay is 26th in yardage differential (minus-56.2) and minus-1 in turnovers.
Denver on offense ranks 17th in points per game (21.5), 15th in passing per play (6.50) and fourth in rushing per play (4.93). On defense, it ranks 32nd in points per game (33.3), 32nd in passing per play (8.25) and 32nd in rushing per play (5.59). Denver has been outgained by 134.0 yards per game, worst in the league, and is minus-5 in turnovers.
In the power rankings: At Sports Illustrated, the Packers are 21st and the Broncos are 30th.
Packers at Broncos High Five
One: Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is off to a tough start – he threw for just 95 yards in Thursday night’s loss to the Chiefs – but he’s been excellent at home. In his last five at Mile High, he’s thrown 13 touchdowns vs. three interceptions, good for a 107.5 rating. He’s thrown at least two touchdowns in each of those starts.
“To win in our league,” Payton said, “you have to be better at throwing the ball.”
Two: It’s early, but the Broncos are on pace to field the worst passing defense in NFL history. Among the dubious numbers, they’re allowing 299.75 passing yards per game. That would match the worst figure of all-time, set by the 2011 Packers, who were playing from ahead for most of the season so teams were forced to throw the ball from the moment they got off the bus.
Oddly, Denver’s got two high-quality starters in the secondary with cornerback Patrick Surtain and safety Justin Simmons. Simmons picked off the 28th pass of his career last week, fifth-most among active safeties. He led the NFL with six picks last year.
Three: Green Bay has won its last two following regular-season byes. When it beat Chicago in 2021, it snapped a four-game losing streak in games following their bye.
Whatever edge the Packers might have coming out of their bye is at least partially offset by the fact the Broncos are coming off a Thursday night game.
For what it’s worth, in games after the bye since the start of the 2019 season, teams are 65-61-1. So, the bye’s immediate dividends are largely overhyped.
Both teams are coming out of their breaks with mostly healthy rosters.
Four: While the Packers lost the game, their porous run defense turned in its best performance of the season against the Raiders. The challenge will be much tougher this week. While Las Vegas is 31st with 2.98 yards per carry, the Broncos are fourth with 4.93 yards per carry.
Rookie Jaleel McLaughlin has 190 yards on 29 carries, a robust 6.6-yard average. Javonte Williams, who rushed for 903 yards and caught 43 passes as a rookie in 2021 but missed most of 2022 after tearing three knee ligaments, rushed for 52 yards on 10 carries against the Chiefs.
“I honestly feel like I'm getting a whole lot better," Williams told reporters. “I feel like I'm getting closer and closer to 100 percent. Just the game that we play, there's always going to be something new that pop[s] up just by getting tackled and things like that that go with the game, but I'm feeling pretty good.”
Five: This quote is from Payton on Wilson and not LaFleur on Jordan Love: “I thought there were certain elements to the plan I didn’t like. We can correct that. That being said—and I said it after the game. I was pleased with how we ran the ball, and yet, we didn’t throw it nearly well enough.
“That wasn’t just on him. It starts with me relative to finding those throws for him—drive starters, for instance, and 1st-and-10 throws that are higher completion percentage throws. Those guys were playing good defense, and that, too, we knew going in. I think that’s really important. It’s a good question. Even during this three- or four-day break, what are the things that can get us ahead of the chains early on?”
