Bryce Young Hassled in Preseason Debut vs. Jets
The two things we've been talking about all preseason in Carolina are the strength of the offensive line and the unreal potential of rookie quarterback Bryce Young.
Unfortunately, the new face of the franchise didn't have much of a chance to showcase his ability thanks to the big guys up front. Ikem Ekwonu got beat twice leading to a pair of QB hits and Michael Jordan gave up a sack on the final play of his last drive.
Young completed 4-of-6 passes for 21 yards and made good decisions with the ball. They didn't really try anything downfield, but didn't really have an opportunity to.
Young's second drive started at their own two. Hubbard rushed for a gain of two on first down, then pulled in a three-yard reception out of the backfield setting up a 3rd and 5. Young went to Laviska Shenault Jr. on what looked like was supposed to be a comeback route to the sideline, but Shenault wasn't on the same page and turned the wrong way.
Two of Young's drives resulted in three and outs, but the blame can't be placed at the rookie's feet. I'm sure head coach Frank Reich is disappointed that they couldn't get more done with the first group, but when the line isn't having a good day, it's not worth the risk of getting your franchise quarterback hurt.
There's always next week.
