Carolina Panthers GM Search Tracker
For the second time in his tenure as owner of the Carolina Panthers, David Tepper is in search of a new general manager. He will also be looking for a new head coach for the second time in as many years.
It's going to be a busy offseason, to say the least. To keep you up to date with the search for a new GM, we have created this tracker.
Here is a rundown of who those candidates are.
Panthers interim GM Dan Morgan
One of the many things the Carolina Panthers have lacked over the last five years is an identity/culture. Someone who knows what that should look like in Carolina and knows what it takes to win here is Dan Morgan.
Morgan spent all seven of his playing years in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers. He racked up 390 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and five interceptions and played a big role on the 2003 team that made it to the Super Bowl.
He began this space of his career back in 2010 as a scouting intern with the Seattle Seahawks and spent eight years there in various roles before becoming the Director of Player Personnel in Buffalo. He's been the assistant GM in Carolina for the last three years under now fired GM Scott Fitterer.
Giants assistant GM Brandon Brown
Brown is an up-and-comer in the league who has been very successful in scouting. He spent five years with the Philadelphia Eagles and received a promotion to Director of Player Personnel in 2021 before taking his current job in New York. He played a key role in identifying talent through the draft and free agency, helping the Giants return to the playoffs for the first time in six years.
Buccaneers assistant GM Mike Greenberg
Greeneburg is a long time Bucs exec, who got his start as a player personnel assistant in 2010. He then spent two seasons as the coordinator of football administration, eight seasons as director of football administration, and two seasons as the vice president of football administration before earning his most recent promotion of assistant GM.
He played a pivotal role in the negotiations and signings of QB Tom Brady, CB Carlton Davis, WR Chris Godwin, C Ryan Jensen, CB Jamel Dean, and LB Lavonte David.
Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis
Tilis interviewed for this position three years ago and is well thought of around the league, so it's no surprise that his name has popped up again. He has been the main orchestrator in contract negotiations for the Chiefs since 2017 which makes a lot of sense given that he cut his teeth in the business as a Salary Cap/Contract Analyst.
Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby
Halaby has been with the Eagles' organization for 16 years serving in a handful of roles before earning the Vice President of Football Operations and Strategy title in 2016. In 2022, he was promoted to assistant GM. Throughout his time in Philly, Halaby has had his hands all over the roster, helping with player evaluations/roster management using analytical methods.
Saints assistant GM Khai Harley
Harley is an experienced exec, having been with the Saints for over 16 seasons. His background is handling the salary cap and looking for fair values for a player based on other contracts around the league. He has also handled contract negotiation and roster management.
Ravens vice president of football administration Nick Matteo
Matteo handles the day to day responsibilities with the salary cap and roster transactions. Since he landed in Baltimore in 2019, he has negotiated several contracts with draft picks, free agents, and in-house guys, including tight end Mark Andrews, offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley, and safety Chuck Clark. Prior to accepting the position in Baltimore, he spent nine years with the NFL Management Council.
Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds
Dodds interviewed with Carolina in its last search for a GM, so there is some familiarity here and obviously Tepper thought enough of him to request permission to speak with him again. However, he is another one with a tie to interim GM Dan Morgan, having spent nearly a decade with the Seahawks organization (2007-16).
Raiders interim GM Champ Kelly
Kelly moved from assistant GM to interim GM following the firing of David Ziegler and helped the Raiders finish the season strong winning five of their last nine. He is well-versed in the scouting side of things, serving as Chicago's Assistant Director of Player Personnel from 2017-21 after spending two seasons as Director of Pro Scouting.
Lions Chief Operating Officer Mike Disner
Disner has had his hands in just about everything over the course of his 16 years in the NFL. He has an extensive background in contract negotiations and roster construction, putting those skills to use in a variety of roles but did get his start as a scouting assistant with the New England Patriots in 2007. He was featured in The Athletic's 40 Under 40 list in 2020 and 2021.
