Could Carson Wentz Become an Option for Carolina?
Frank Reich takes over a team in need of a quarterback. Luckily for him, the Washington Commanders may have one to spare as they are likely to move on from veteran Carson Wentz, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
While Wentz may not be the long-term solution Reich and the Panthers are looking for, he does have familiarity with Reich's system and could serve as a "bridge" to the future of the franchise.
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera surprisingly declared former UNC QB Sam Howell the starter moving into the offseason despite only starting one game as a rookie.
“The biggest thing we decided is he will start out as QB1," Rivera said about Howell during an interview with Pro Football Talk Live. “He will most certainly get the first opportunity. We go into OTAs and minicamp, he’ll be QB1. He’ll fight for that position. We’ll give him every opportunity to earn it, and we’ll see what happens when we get into training camp and through it.”
Wentz has two years remaining on his current contract. He'll carry a cap hit of $26.1M in 2023 and $27.2M in 2024, but those numbers will change if Washington is unable to trade him and is forced to cut the veteran QB.
Reich helped Wentz to be an MVP candidate in just his second year in the league when he was the offensive coordinator in Philadelphia. Once Reich left for the head coaching job in Indy, Wentz had a dip in production. He reunited with Reich in Indianapolis and although he didn't "light it up" he had solid numbers, throwing for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
