Dan Morgan Discusses Roster Construction, Possible Moves + More

Carolina Panthers assistant GM Dan Morgan spoke to the media on Tuesday morning.

Cutting players at once instead of in stages

"I actually like it a little better. From the cut down standpoint, I like it better. You have 'em all at once. They're out there and our reports are done and it gives us a little more time to evaluate them and for our scouts to watch the tape and puts the reports in. Either way, it'd be fine, but I like it this way. I think it'll be more efficient for us."

Where the team needs to upgrade

"I think our philosophy is we try to upgrade everywhere. We want to make this the most competitive roster in the NFL. One way of doing that is to have great depth and add to the competition. That's what we're going to do."

Possibility of trading and what that would look like

"I think for us, at this point, we don't want to give away picks. A big thing for us is let's keep our picks. Let's be efficient and trust our scouting process and when the waivers come out, we have those players identified and we're going to be ready to claim a guy if need be."

Any undrafted free agents that have stood out

"Yeah, there's a few guys we like. I don't really want to give away the secrets because there may be other teams watching this but there's some guys that have done a really good job for us and that's really a credit to our scouts. We're excited about some of those guys."

Building depth in the front seven to cater to the 3-4 scheme

'Talking to Evero about the defense, he does want those bigger, longer defenders. Guys that can take up space. They call it half a gap. He's just looking for those bigger, longer bodies and obviously wants athletes. We're going to target those types of guys."

Reason for parting ways with Marquan McCall

"Marquan did a good job for us. He came back in shape. He's a great kid. And I think it really just came down to fit. Just talking to the new staff and Evero, I just thought it was time for us to move on and give him an opportunity to find another home. That's why we did this now, just to kind of give him another opportunity."

How many quarterbacks the team will keep

'In terms of playing time, that's up to Coach Reich. Again, it's competition and whoever is out there playing, we're going to evaluate and if we decide to keep a third quarterback that's going to be the decision for Scott [Fitterer] and Coach Reich."

If they can trade kicker Matthew Wright for a draft pick

"That's something that can definitely be talked about. We haven't talked about doing that. He's done a good job for us. From our perspective, Eddy's our kicker and when he comes back, it's his job again. And if anything, it gives us a good emergency kicker in the future."
