Greg Olsen Interested in Panthers' Head Coaching Job, Per Report

One of the best players in Panthers franchise history is interested in being Frank Reich's replacement.
In this story:

David Tepper is not your typical NFL owner. He does things unconventionally. He has hired a college head coach and he's fired a general manager and three head coaches since he bought the team in 2018.

If anyone is going to think outside of the box, it's Tepper. One interesting report that surfaced Monday evening was that former Panthers tight end Greg Olsen would be interested in the Carolina head coaching job if approached, according to Joe Person of The Athletic.

Of course, Olsen has zero coaching experience of any sort outside of coaching his son's youth football team. Since Olsen retired from the NFL, he's been in a broadcasting role with FOX and has quickly become one of the very best to do it. He's very intelligent, breaks down the game extremely well, and gives his unbiased opinion.

Although it would be a bold move to hire someone with literally zero coaching experience to lead your NFL franchise, very few know the Panthers' organization and the city of Charlotte better than Greg Olsen. He would immediately have a strong backing from the fanbase and would be respected within the locker room, considering he played the game at a very high level for a long time and isn't far removed from his playing days.

All that being said, it's a move David Tepper simply can't make. He's whiffed on his first two hires and has been dubbed as one of the worst owners in professional sports by many national analysts because of his quick trigger on coaches and the lack of success the team has had since he arrived. Hiring Olsen or any coach with zero experience would tarnish his reputation even further and would likely ruffle a few feathers around the league in the way he handles his business.

Realistically, Tepper has two options - go get a proven coach or find a young, innovative offensive mind that is willing to risk having a short leash for his first-ever head coaching gig in the NFL.
