How Soon Will Bryce Young Take Complete Control of First-Team Reps in Training Camp?
A year ago, the Panthers were unsure of how to divvy up the first-team reps amongst the quarterbacks with Baker Mayfield coming into the fold late, Sam Darnold returning after a disastrous season, and wanting to get a look at rookie Matt Corral.
Here in a couple of weeks, the objective is clear - get it turned over to Bryce Young as quickly as possible. There's no secret with the Panthers' plans in regard to the No. 1 overall pick. He's going to be the starter Week 1, barring an unforeseen injury.
So, when will Young completely take over all first-team reps in training camp?
I would expect it to happen within the first week. There's no need to wait much longer than that, considering how quickly he picks up on things. Getting all the first-team reps for roughly a month heading into the season will allow him to continue building chemistry with his receivers, tight ends, and backs while also understanding where to slide his protection on certain plays.
If he handles the workload well throughout training camp and through a couple preseason games, the Panthers could then hold him out of the third and final preseason game which is likely to happen anyway, unless they just want him to take the opening series one final time.
Most rookies wouldn't gain 100% of the first-team reps in training camp and probably wouldn't see that take place until mid-season when the offense begins to make the transition from the bridge QB to the rookie. But Bryce Young isn't your typical rookie quarterback. He's ready for this moment and quite honestly, would probably be okay taking all of the first team reps from day one.
