INSIDE SCOOP: The Jury is Still Out on Michael Schofield III
The 2019 season was a tough one for Panthers fans to endure, mainly due to the offensive line's poor play throughout much of the season. Pass protection was a major weakness as they finished dead last in sacks allowed (58). The front office made an emphasis on reshaping the line this offseason by adding Russell Okung, John Miller, and Michael Schofield III.
Today, we take a peek inside what Michael Schofield III brings to the Panthers offense as we bring Broncos insider Chad Jensen in for some insight.
"Michael Schofield arrived as a third-round pick out of Michigan and promptly disappointed the entirety of Broncos Country. The Broncos viewed him as a tackle and suffice to say, his play at that position, even during the team's Super Bowl 50 run, left much to be desired. However, he was the starting right tackle on that World Champion roster and despite his previous faux pas, Schofield really stabilized his play down the stretch and in the playoffs," Jensen said. "He wasn't the liability as a pass blocker he initially proved to be but it wasn't enough to convince the Broncos to offer him a second contract. In L.A, the Chargers played Schofield inside where he seemed to be more comfortable. As a third-round pick, Schofield contributed to a Lombardi Trophy, so he wasn't exactly a bust but not exactly a draft success to write home about."
One thing Schofield III brings is stability. He has started over 32 consecutive games and has started all 16 games in three of the last five seasons. He will be in a battle for a starting spot with Dennis Daley and/or potentially Greg Little if they decide to kick him inside. A starting spot is not a guarantee, but he will certainly add depth along the line. He was a cheap option for the Panthers and is a low risk, high reward type of acquisition.
