Jonathan Stewart Describes Why He Likes the Josh McCown Hire
All coaches have to start somewhere. And for 43-year-old Josh McCown, that start is going to be on Frank Reich's staff with the Carolina Panthers, leading the quarterbacks room.
McCown spent a total of 17 years in the NFL, playing for 12 different teams. Unfortunately, none of the 12 organizations he played for viewed him as a franchise guy. But he did however, have a reputation of being a really great teammate with an extremely high IQ. This is a big reason why so many teams wanted him as their backup quarterback.
During his career, McCown had a two-year pitstop in Carolina backing up Jake Delhomme. Former Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart discussed what he was like as a teammate and why he likes this hire during this week's episode of the Bleav in Panthers podcast.
"I spent two years with Josh. He's one of the best men I've ever encountered. The most authentic human being. As far as getting him as a coaching hire, this is a guy that's going to be able to not just develop the position but to help develop the man. And how to be a professional. And how to carry yourself. How to study the game. How to know the game. I mean, everywhere he's been, he's been a player/coach. So to have a guy that has played on several different teams and to be brought in by so many teams says a lot about him as a player and probably even more so about him as a person. There's value in having someone that can relay the message and be able to articulate what the objective is to the player. And I think he does that well. He knows the game in and out. I mean, shoot. He almost got the Texans head coaching job. I think this is an opportunity for him to really showcase what he can do as a coach in the NFL. I think at some point, we're going to see Josh McCown be an NFL head coach somewhere."
