Marquan McCall Hits Waivers Again Following Claim by Patriots
Earlier in the week, the Carolina Panthers made the surprising decision to cut defensive lineman Marquan McCall, who had started the first two preseason games at defensive tackle.
"These are always tough decisions," said head coach Frank Reich. "We appreciate his contribution. Honestly, we're doing it now because we think he's going to be on a roster somewhere it just comes down to two things. It comes down to a fit for us and what we're trying to do and then we've had a couple guys at that position who have really looked good."
Something about the move still doesn't add up. I can understand losing the starting job, but to go from starter to cut is quite the turn of events. Assistant GM Dan Morgan echoed what Reich said about the decision.
"Marquan did a good job for us. He came back in shape. He's a great kid. And I think it really just came down to fit. Just talking to the new staff and Evero, I just thought it was time for us to move on and give him an opportunity to find another home. That's why we did this now, just to kind of give him another opportunity."
McCall didn't spend much time on waivers as he was picked up by the New England Patriots the very next day. However, he is back on the waiver wire again due to a failed physical where they flagged an issue with his knee.
