Three Things to Watch For: Panthers vs. Jets

A few things to keep your eyes on in this week's preseason game.

The Carolina Panthers and New York Jets are set to open up preseason play at Bank of America Stadium Saturday evening. As always on the eve of game day, we list three things to keep your eyes on during this week's game.

Bryce Young

Surprise, surprise! Yes, we got a little bit of a look at what Bryce can do versus another team in the joint practice with the Jets, but this is the real deal. How does he move around in the pocket with actual pressure in his face? Does he stay true to his game or does he try to push the envelope and put the ball in harms way? I don't think we'll see anything out of the ordinary as it will be some pretty basic calls where the ball gets out of his hand quick. Still, to me, this is the first actual test for the No. 1 overall pick.

Which receiver on the roster bubble steps up

Damiere Byrd is out for anywhere from a month to 6-8 weeks. It's unfortunate for him, but it opens up a spot on the roster for either Shi Smith or perhaps Derek Wright. Don't be completely focused on the final numbers though. Watch for their ability to block on the perimeter and their ability to get separation.

Where Corral is at in his development

Corral had his rookie year robbed of him thanks to a Lisfranc injury. He's not the future of the Carolina Panthers, but he could be viewed as the long-term backup for Bryce Young if he performs well. If he really impresses, it could even spark trade interest around the league for a team that is looking to add a young quarterback. Spending all of last season observing and now working in a room with Young, Andy Dalton, Josh McCown, and even Jim Caldwell has put him in a much better spot than where he was a year ago at this time.
