Camp in Spartanburg is over and I've got some thoughts.

In this story:

Time to pack things up and head back to the Queen City.

Thursday's joint practice between the Panthers and Jets was canceled due to inclement weather in the area, marking the official end of the Panthers' time on the campus of Wofford College in Spartanburg.

Over the last two weeks or so, a lot of things stood out to me. I won't bore you with A fully packed training camp recap, so instead I'll offer a thought (or two) on each position group.

QB: Bryce Young is a dude

I loved the way Bryce kept his composure throughout camp. He hit a wall there for a practice or two but bounced back with some answers. I wanted to reserve judgment until I saw him against a defense other than his own and man, what he did against the Jets on Wednesday was impressive. Completed a ton of throws over the middle and really only had one bad decision. I'm sold. This kid is going to be special. It's just a matter of how soon that will happen.

RB: Depth at running back

Miles Sanders is as good as advertised. He offers a lot in the passing game, which is an area that Chuba Hubbard still needs to make progress in. That said, both Hubbard and Raheem Blackshear showed the ability to hit the hole and go. Duce Staley has some options in that backfield. And yes, Blackshear is more than just a special teamer.

WR: No true No. 1

This group is what we thought it would be heading into camp. A lot of quality players that will each contribute in their own way. Young spread the ball out pretty evenly and didn't really lean heavily on any one guy. He and DJ Chark established a strong connection and that looks like it could be something special. Terrace Marshall Jr. and the rookie Jonathan Mingo took turns impressing throughout camp while Adam Thielen was Mr. Steady.

TE: Different body types/skills at tight end

Tommy Tremble, Ian Thomas, and maybe another tight end will get looks in the passing game, but it's clear that Hayden Hurst is going to be heavily featured in this offense. He does a great job of getting separation early out of his break, opening an immediate safety valve for the rookie. Career year incoming for Hurst.

OL: Cade Mays is the guy at right guard

Austin Corbett is still a long way from making his return from his ACL injury. In the meantime, it looks like Mays has locked up the interim right guard spot. Very high IQ player that has made a big jump from his rookie year.

DL: Top-heavy d-line

The three projected starters Derrick Brown, Shy Tuttle, and Marquan McCall are about as good as it gets for a defense that is transitioning to a new scheme. But with the transition, they are lacking depth, particularly on the interior. I would imagine that's one spot that Scott Fitterer will keep his eyes open for later in the month/early September.

LB: Incredible depth

Kamu Grugier-Hill is making a name for himself. Almost every practice, he's making a big-time play. Initially, it felt like he would be primarily a special teamer that could rotate in at linebacker. After a strong two weeks, he's played his way into a defensive role. But he's not the only one. Kobe Jones has flashed at outside linebacker along with undrafted free agent Eku Leota, both of whom are pushing for a roster spot. This is the deepest this group has been in my four years of covering the team.

CB: Still concern

CJ Henderson and Keith Taylor had some bright moments in Spartanburg. Can that translate to preseason games? We'll see. Personally, I feel adding one more corner to the mix couldn't hurt.

S: Vonn Bell might be the biggest free agent signing

Communication, experience, confidence, swagger. You name it, Vonn Bell's got it. He doesn't get the national attention he deserves. With he and Xavier Woods in the back end of the defense, there will be fewer explosive plays allowed by this secondary. Very underrated signing for the Panthers.
