Carolina doesn't need to spend its money on another running back.

Panthers GM Scott Fitterer told fans when he took the job that he would "be in on every deal" and so far, he's fulfilled that promise. It makes sense. If you don't look into everything, you're doing your team a disservice.

That doesn't mean that every big name that pops up in free agency or trade rumors should take precedent over the team's needs, even if there is money available.  That's the case here with free agent running back Dalvin Cook, who was released by the Minnesota Vikings over the weekend.

Cook is without a doubt one of the best backs in the league having rushed for 1,100+ yards in four consecutive seasons. But spending more money in the running back room just doesn't seem like something Fitterer would or should do.

Just a few months ago, Carolina agreed to a four-year deal with Miles Sanders but there is a potential out after two years. There is $13 million in guaranteed money tied up with Sanders and if you add Cook to the mix, you're likely looking at well north of $20 million guaranteed on a position no one wants to spend money on.

Plus, Sanders came to Carolina with the intention of being "the guy" after he saw his role diminish in the Eagles' Super Bowl loss last season.

“Maybe you should ask them [Philadelphia] why I’m moving here,” Sanders told Steve Reed of the Associated Press last week

Sanders isn't a selfish player by any means but you don't want to ruin the trust early in the relationship by bringing in another high profile name. Chuba Hubbard has shown he can be a solid No. 2 back in flashes but if the Panthers feel the need to add to the room, they would be better served to target a third down back who can help in pass protection.

Running back situation aside, Carolina has other holes to fill such as defensive end and corner. That's where the focus should be right now.
