4 Panthers Whose 2020 Season Will Impact Their Future With the Team

The 2020 season is going to be crucial for some members of the Carolina Panthers

Several Carolina Panthers are entering the final year of their contract or in some cases, the only year on their contract. However, there are four players that need to show out in order to prove their worth to the coaching staff and front office to get extended next offseason.

OT Russell Okung

For the first time in seemingly forever, the Panthers have a solid left tackle. Okung is one of the more respected tackles in all of football and has played with consistency throughout his entire career. Playing on a rebuilding team for a veteran is never easy, but Okung seems happy to be with the Panthers organization. Unfortunately, he may be too pricey to re-sign in the offseason if he produces at a high level. Also, being at the age of 31, Okung has more football behind him than he does in front of him. If he struggles, does Carolina look elsewhere for a younger, much cheaper option?

OT Taylor Moton

Moton is entering the final year of his rookie deal and although he is not focused on contract talks as of right now, I'm sure getting extended is on his mind. Moton has played well in his first three years of the league and could be a piece for the Panthers to build their offensive line around. Should his production drop off considerably, the front office may be hesitant to re-sign him.

WR Curtis Samuel

Matt Rhule and Joe Brady are going to find as many ways as possible to get the ball into Samuel's hands in 2020. He's dynamic with the ball in space and has the potential to be a dangerous receiver, but has to produce more. The staff has flirted with the idea of even using him at running back here and there, which is just another way to get Samuel more touches. This year is critical for him. A big year could mean a big pay day from the Panthers or any other team that may be interested in luring him in.

LB Tahir Whitehead

The 30-year old linebacker has played really good football over the last four seasons and now has a chance to help lead a very young Carolina defense alongside Shaq Thompson. Replacing Luke Kuechly is not easy by any means, but Whitehead is no average joe - he will get the job done. If Whitehead plays big again in 2020, you can almost guarantee that the Panthers would be willing to give him a multi-year deal.
