Al Holcomb Takes a New Job

Carolina's interim defensive coordinator is on the move.

As expected, Al Holcomb will not be remaining with the Carolina Panthers. Instead, he will be taking a senior defensive assistant position with the Buffalo Bills, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Holcomb coached on Sean McDermott's defensive staff in Carolina from 2013-16 as the linebackers coach.

He did receive some interest for other defensive coordinator positions, specifically Atlanta, who requested permission to speak with him about the job following Dean Pees' retirement.

Holcomb took over as Carolina's defensive coordinator following the team's decision to part ways with Phil Snow. The unit made significant progress under his watch, particularly in the run game and creating pressure on the quarterback. A number of players took their game to the next level this season, which is a credit to not only them but to Holcomb.

Linebacker Frankie Luvu posted career highs in tackles (111), tackles for loss (19), and sacks (7). Defensive end Brian Burns also had a career year, posting new highs in tackles (63), tackles for loss (17), QB hits (22), and sacks (12.5). And Derrick Brown posted career highs in tackles (67) and QB hits (12).

Had Steve Wilks landed the Panthers head coaching job, the assumption was that Holcomb would have remained on staff as the defensive coordinator.
