Five Panthers Named Cut/Trade Candidates
There will be a lot of moving parts this offseason in Carolina as the Panthers try to reshape the roster under new GM Dan Morgan and head coach Dave Canales. In an effort to create more cap space, there are a handful of players the Panthers could cut or trade to open up more money.
Nick Spano of uStadium mentioned five players on the Panthers roster who could be cut/trade candidates. I added my thoughts on each candidate he listed below.
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. - Saves $1.4M
Marshall has been lost in the shuffle under two coaching staffs now and reportedly requested a trade last season. I'm not sure exactly where he fits in Dave Canales' plans, if at all. I can see TMJ being cut, especially if Dan Morgan and co. bring in two or three new bodies at the position.
RG Austin Corbett - Saves $6.2M (Post June 1)
The Panthers must improve the offensive line and with Corbett suffering back-to-back knee injuries, it makes him a prime cut candidate. When healthy, he's rock solid. The question for Carolina is - do you have enough confidence in his health moving forward? If not, they could bring in competition or move on from him completely. I'm not sure I see the latter happening.
LB Shaq Thompson - Saves $3.1M (Post June 1)
Thompson is the heart and soul of the Panthers' defense. A vocal leader that the defense missed last season. He fits the traits of that "dog" Dan Morgan wants on his roster. Unless there is concern with his health, I'd expect him back.
CB Donte Jackson - Saves $10.5M (Post June 1)
Troy Hill played fairly well and could give the Panthers the comfort to move off of Donte Jackson, but I'm sure they'd prefer to use Hill more situationally. If the Panthers do move on from Jackson, it would be via trade. There's no way they'd just outright cut him.
S Xavier Woods - Saves $4.5M
Woods is the Panthers' key communicator in the back end and has been for two years now. He and Vonn Bell form a strong veteran duo. Replacing Woods with a cheaper contract would be quite a tough chore.
