How Former Panther QB PJ Walker Fared in Browns Win Over Niners
PJ Walker slid into a starting role this weekend for the Cleveland Browns, filling in for the injured Deshaun Watson.
The former Panther quarterback struggled throwing the ball but did just enough to help the Browns to a stunning 19-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, who entered the day undefeated.
Walker completed 18-of-34 pass attempts for 192 yards on the day and threw two picks. He did have a 58-yard completion to Amari Cooper who put a corner on skates early in his release and broke wide open down the sideline. Cooper also made a really nice, contested catch that had a 9% catch probability according to NextGenStats.
“He battled,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said. “He’s going to tell you he wishes he had a couple of plays back like all quarterbacks do. That’s kind of what we talk about. We’re striving for perfection, but it’s hard to attain it. But he made some throws, he made some plays, he ran the show. So that’s what he does. He’s a battler. He’s a tough kid.”
With the win, Walker now has a 5-3 record as a starter in the NFL and when you look at his numbers you wonder how that's even possible. He's completing passes at a 56.9% rate and has tossed only five touchdowns to 13 interceptions.
There's some optimism in Cleveland that Watson (shoulder) could return for their Week 7 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.
