Panthers Expected to Start Andy Dalton at QB vs. Seahawks

Carolina will turn to the veteran in Week 3.

Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young (ankle) is not expected to play in this Sunday's game in Seattle. Young has missed practice each of the last two days and in his place, veteran Andy Dalton has taken all the reps with the ones.

“If Andy’s the starter, we got a lot of confidence," head coach Frank Reich said on Wednesday. "This is why you bring someone like Andy in. Our goal is to put our team in [a] position to win championships. And even despite a tough start that’s still our vision, that’s still our goal, that’s what we’re working towards.

“And my experience personally, as a player and as a coach, is that you’re going to need somebody for one game or two or three or somewhere along the line. And you’re gonna need to win those games. And if Andy plays, we believe he gives us a very good chance to win.”

Reich also mentioned that very little would change with Dalton under center and today, offensive coordinator Thomas Brown echoed similar thoughts.

"I would say the difference would end up being him being an experienced quarterback, having a ton of reps. Obviously playing this opponent before in the past. It might give him some more insight into what he likes to be called in a game when it comes to some of the drop-back game, play-action pass from an inventory standpoint. But we'll keep the core of our offense together."

For his career, Dalton has thrown for 38,150 yards, 244 touchdowns, 144 interceptions, and owns a completion percentage of 62.5%. Dalton is a three-time Pro Bowler who has logged 162 starts since 2011, compiling an 83-77-2 record.
