Rashaan Gaulden Criticizes Former Panthers Coach Perry Fewell
Former Panthers defensive back Rashaan Gaulden had quite a bit to say about former defensive backs coach Perry Fewell on Twitter. According to Gaulden, Fewell left a sour taste in his mouth. He looks forward to redeeming himself under a different coaching staff.
Gaulden currently plays for the New York Giants after being waived from Carolina in November. In twenty-four games with the Panthers, Gaulden only recorded a total of 20 combined tackles, one forced fumble, and one pass deflection. Due to his limited performance on the field, he was waived nine games into the 2019 season. Gaulden was a third-round draft pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Fewell took over as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2019 season after Ron Rivera was fired. The Panthers finished the season with four straight losses as a result. Fewell was an interim head coach once before with the Buffalo Bills in 2009 and had a 3-4 record. This may have been the reasoning behind him being appointed to the same position with the Panthers.
As expected, Fewell (along with the rest of the coaching staff) and the Panthers went their separate ways. Fewell is now the vice president of the NFL Officiating Association. The Panthers secondary has not been all that impressive under Fewell, so this may be a sign that things could improve with that position group.
Jason Simmons is the new defensive backs coach in town; he coached the Packers defensive backs for two years prior to joining the Panthers coaching staff. Hopefully, he will generate better results out of his players. As for Gaulden, he looks forward to taking advantage of his fresh start with the Giants.
