The New England Patriots haven't lived up to new head coach Jerod Mayo's promise to "burn some cash" in free agency this offseason. But on Sunday they did write a big check.

According to multiple sources, the Patriots locked up Kyle Dugger, signing the safety to a four-year, $58 million contract including $32.5 million guaranteed. A big-time payday for one of the team's best defenders.

The Pats placed the franchise tag on Dugger last month. Per those terms, he would have earned $17.1 million this season. The new contract, however, secures one of New England's foundational pieces for the future.

Dugger is the first top Patriots draft pick (first player selected, not necessarily first round) to get a second contract from the team since Nate Solder (1st round, 2011)

The Leonir-Rhyne alum has made 343 tackles (including 17 for a loss), 20 pass breakups, and nine interceptions over his first four seasons and he scored three touchdowns during the 2022 season.

Since joining the team as a second-round (No. 37 overall) draft selection in 2020, Dugger has been one of the team’s most reliable defenders. The 27-year-old led all defensive backs with 109 total tackles, while also compiling seven passes-defensed, two interceptions and 1.5 sacks. His on-field prowess combined with his football acumen should help him command several lucrative offers, should he hit the open market.

The Patriots also signed offensive lineman Mike Onwenu to a long-term deal this offseason. But they still enter the April 25 draft needing upgrades in offensive skill position and a franchise quarterback.
