Ty Law Reveals Who Deserves Credit for New England's 'Patriot Way'
Ty Law loves him some Bill Belichick. He's just not enamored with the former New England Patriots coach getting credit for everything associated with the team's Super Bowl dynasty.
During an appearance on former teammate Julian Edelman's Games With Names podcast, the Patriots and Pro Football Hall of Famer explained that players - and not Belichick - should be credited for the creation and implementation of the famed "Patriot Way."
“We understood that this is work," Law said. "We got families, but we made a conscious effort to do stuff not only as a DB group but we did stuff as a team and that's when we started winning. We started seeing things change around, that's what became the Patriot Way."
Belichick has long been the face of the "Patriot Way" as his teams won six Super Bowls by paying attention to details, remaining disciplining and following a "Do Your Job" mantra. Law was a leader and one of the best players that went to three Pro Bowls during the first chapter of the Pats' dynasty that won three Super Bowls.
Said Law, "The coaches get credit and Belichick and Scott [Pioli], that's bulls(bleep) ... the Patriot Way started in the locker room.”
Another key member of the Pats' dynasty also recently harpooned the mythical "Patriot Way."
“I’ve never used that term in my entire life,” Tom Brady said on the Pat McAfee Show last January. “I think when people say it, I'm always like, ‘What's the Patriot Way? It sounds like the title of a book.' I think what we tried to do was things the right way, I think we tried to practice the right way and prepare the right way. What happened on gameday was ultimately a reflection of what we practice."
Law also shared a story on Edelman's podcast on how the coach got him to take a pay cut to keep a friend of his on the team.
“That's Bill being Bill. So we ended up working it out. I restructured,” Law said.
