New England Patriots Ex Coach Steve Belichick Roasts Father Bill
Steve Belichick is onto Seattle and he's apparently brought a Belichick-ian sense of humor with him.
Belichick, the son and assistant of longtime New England Patriots boss Bill, was publicly introduced as a member of the Washington Huskies coaching staff on Wednesday, as he's set to take over the defending National Championship Game finalists' defensive coordinator role. Finally free from the familiarity of Foxborough, Belichick's new public will obviously want to know how he differs from his dad.
In video from RealDawg.com's Evan Feather, Belichick offered a funny yet factual reply to that query.
"I've got a job and he doesn’t," Belichick said, drawing major laughs from the questioners gathered at a media luncheon hosted by the Huskies.
Belichick clarified that he views his father as "a mentor" but that he's excited to embark on the Washington challenge with a chance to establish his own coaching identity.
"I’m myself," Belichick said. "(I'm) excited to get out onto the field and work with these guys and work with kids and recruit kids ... I’m just going to be myself. I’m not going to try and be (my dad).”
This NFL season is set to be the first without Steve's father on the sidelines since 1974, one year before he took on an assistant's role with the Baltimore Colts. That began a legendary five-decade run, one that featured eight Super Bowl victories, including six at the helm of the Patriots. Steve was by his side for three of those wins in a variety of defensive coaching roles and now embarks on his first coordinator job with Washington.
Set to partake in their first year of Big Ten action, the Huskies embark on a new era with the sons of recently-departed NFL coaching royalty on their staffs: a Belichick is set to oversee the defense while Brennan Carroll, the son of former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete, takes over offensive coordinator duties. UW kicks off the 2024 campaign on Aug. 24 against Weber State.
