Rumor: Bill Belichick Leaves New England Patriots to Coach Giants - And Draft Caleb Williams?
There are, we think, some increasingly legitimate scenarios in which the New England Patriots and their head coach Bill Belichick could part ways ... maybe even sooner rather than later, given the present 1-4 direction of the Pats.
There is also, in theory, a scenario in which this year's New York Giants are so bad - they, too, are 1-4 - that they end up with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Put it all together and former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason doing his radio show in New York this week, has invented a hypothetical scenario that brings it all to the Big Apple.
"What happens if the Giants end up with the No. 1 overall pick and Bill Belichick decides it is time to leave New England," Esiason said on "Boomer & Gio.'' "Now what? Caleb Williams and Bill Belichick together in New York. You don't think Giants fans would lose their minds over that?"
The Giants owning the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, in this scenario, would mean somehow saying an eventual goodbye to QB Daniel Jones (who they just signed to a massive contract) to instead say hello to the pick that would be used on USC quarterback Caleb Williams.
And, in this scenario, the Giants would be dumping second-year coach Brian Daboll, who led them to the NFL playoffs last year, in favor of Belichick, who was the top defensive assistant for the Giants from 1979-1990, when he coached under Bill Parcells and mentored the great Lawrence Taylor.
How many facts exist behind this speculation? Maybe a few. How much more speculation is on the way if the Patriots and the Giants keep losing? Maybe a lot.
