Michael Bennett Didn't Seem to Learn Anything from His One-Week Suspension
When the New England Patriots suspended veteran defensive end Michael Bennett this past week for conduct detrimental to the team, which stemmed from an argument with position coach Brett Bielema about his playing time, it was expected that Bennett would learn from the suspension.
Head coach Bill Belichick expects the players to put their full trust into the coaching staff, whether it be in regards to play-calling or personnel decisions. Bennett didn't do that, and Belichick wanted him to know he needs to follow protocol if he wants to be a Patriot, which is why the suspension was administered to the aging defensive end.
But when Bennett spoke to the media for the first time on Wednesday since returning from his suspension, he didn't seem to have any remorse for his actions which caused him to miss the team's Week 7 game against the New York Jets.
"I didn’t take any nothing," Bennett said via ESPN's Mike Reiss when asked what he took away from his one-week suspension. "I got suspended. Lost money. What am I supposed to take away from that? There’s no love lost. It’s just how it is.”
When asked if he was happy here in New England, he said "It is what it is, man."
Players that have an attitude such as Bennett's don't typically last too long as a Patriot. Bennett has a long history of voicing his opinion, no matter the topic, so this falls in line with his personality, regardless of the team he is playing for.
It would be no surprise if New England tries to trade away Bennett before the Oct. 29 trade deadline. Back in March, the Patriots traded a fifth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Bennett and a 2020 seventh-round pick, so one would think at the very best that New England could get fifth or later round pick for the 33-year-old.
