Patriots' Belichick Close to NFL Infamy
Oftentimes, Bill Belichick has found himself on the right side of history.
However, if the New England Patriots lose to the New York Jets on Sunday, Belichick's name will be in the history books for the wrong reason. Belichick has lost 177 games as a head coach and is one away from tying former Dallas Cowboys head coach Tom Landry for the most losses in NFL history.
Belichick's trek down the wrong side of history epitomizes his worst season in his 24 years as the Patriots head coach. Belichick's struggles this season and since Tom Brady left in 2020, have his seat as hot as it has ever been at the helm in New England.
The one silver lining is Belichick and the Patriots (4-12) have enjoyed plenty of success against the Jets, including a 15-10 win in Week 3 at MetLife Stadium. New England has won 15 straight games against the Jets (6-10) and Belichick is 38-11 against the Jets as the Patriots' head coach.
Belichick Reveals Thoughts on Season Finale: Patriots Swan Song?
If this indeed ends up being Belichick's final game as New England's head coach, it's only fitting it'd come against a franchise he has owned and was once the head coach for a grand total of one day before writing that he resigned on a napkin. Staving off tying the record for the most losses at a head coach at the hands of the Jets would be one final twist of a knife toward a franchise that has hated him from the moment he resigned to become the Patriots' head coach and lead them to six Super Bowls.
New England hosts the Jets on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium.
