Devin McCourty: Chiefs Coming For Patriots' Dynasty

After becoming the third franchise to win back-to-back Super Bowls, the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to surpass the New England Patriots for having the title of being the "greatest dynasty" ever.

As the New England Patriots did in 2003 and 2004, the Kansas City Chiefs made history Sunday, beating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime to become the third franchise to win back-to-back Super Bowls.

They joined the likes of the Patriots and the Niners as the only other team to accomplish the feat, which has naturally spurred conversations of the Chiefs potentially becoming the NFL's next "dynasty."

With three Lombardi Trophies in five years, not only is there talk of the Chiefs being a dynasty, but even star quarterback Patrick Mahomes potentially being the one to supplant Tom Brady as the "best ever." This begs the question recently asked to former Patriots safety Devin McCourty in an interview on the Greg Hill Show: is the Chiefs' new goal now to "chase" Brady and New England's dynasty?

"Travis Kelce will be hanging on as long as possible to play. I think the Hunt family will be pouring in whatever amount of money that [Brett] Veach and [Andy] Reid think they need," McCourty said. "Like, why wouldn't you? ... We keep seeing all these graphics where you put Mahomes and Brady after his first seven or six years ...

"They understand [they] have somebody who is very rare and as awesome as Brady was; we're one year removed from him playing football, and we're already talking about a guy who could possibly catch him. I think Kansas City will pour every single resource into not just trying to catch the Patriots or be even, [but] to like set something that will never be caught."

With six Super Bowls in 17 years, the Patriots are undoubtedly the proverbial "gold standard" for any franchise that wants to take the title of being the "best ever." The Chiefs are currently on pace to match the Patriots in terms of Super Bowls.

New England won three Super Bowls in four years, with the '03 and '04 seasons marking their historic back-to-back and their second and third Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. Similarly, the Chiefs have won three in five seasons after winning their first Lombardi in 2019, where they also defeated the Niners.

Where Do Patriots Rank Among Super Bowl Champions?

Just like with anything competitive, there is always the drive to be the best. Current Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has chased Jordan throughout his career, or in Brady's case, he was looking to supplant his once idol, Joe Montana.

Now, after entering the same rarified air as the Patriots, the Chiefs will, in the opinion of McCourty, look to take more of the spotlight away from New England and stand alone as the greatest franchise ever.
