Former Patriots Captain Devin McCourty Lands New TV Gig
FOXBORO — When longtime New England Patriots captain Devin McCourty announced his retirement from the NFL in March, he reflected on his 13-year career as a “great ride.”
However, the three-time Super Bowl champion is not leaving football behind entirely.
McCourty, per a Tuesday morning report from the New York Post, will be joining NBC’s Sunday Night Football as a pregame analyst this season. He will join another former Patriots safety - Rodney Harrison - who currently serves as an analyst for the network’s “Football Night in America” studio show.
Since being drafted in the first round (27 overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft, McCourty became a stalwart in the Pats defense. Following his conversion from cornerback to safety, the Rutgers product has been one of the Pats most prolific on-field defenders, as well as one of its most respected leaders in the locker room.
Throughout his career, McCourty appeared in a combined 229 regular season and playoff games as a member of the Patriots. In addition to his championship rings, he earned three second-team All Pro selections, as well as being voted to two Pro Bowls and the Patriots’ Team of the 2010s.
Many had speculated that a successful future in broadcasting may be waiting for McCourty on the other side of his playing days. During the Pats Week 10 bye in November, McCourty joined CBS’ broadcast on both The Other Pregame Show and The NFL Today. Most recently, he joined his brother Jason — with whom he hosted the Double Trouble with the McCourty Twins podcast —as a guest co-host for NFL Media's Good Morning Football.
While his appearances were brief, his valuable insight and analysis, as well as his charisma may clearly made him an attractive candidate to fill NBC’s analyst role.
Accordingly, Patriots fans will still get the chance to spend part of their game day with a true fan favorite in Devin McCourty.
