Odds Oops: Patriots Suddenly Losing Race to Sign DeAndre Hopkins?

The release of new betting odds on the race to see who signs DeAndre Hopkins brought to an end the New England Patriots' time as the favorite.

The New England Patriots' time as the betting favorites to land free-agent receiver DeAndre Hopkins was short-lived. The latest odds from DraftKings have seen a shift in favor of the Tennessee Titans.

The newest odds saw the Patriots go from a -120 favorite to being in second place at +400 behind the Titans at -300. This dramatic shift in the odds makes you wonder if those in Vegas know something.

While it is certainly possible, it seems the change in favorites is a reaction to a recent report from ESPN's Mike Reiss, who said that despite both the Titans and Patriots having made offers, Tennesee has been "more aggressive" than New England in the push to sign Hopkins.

"The Tennessee Titans and Patriots have made offers, the Titans have been more aggressive to this point, and Hopkins hasn’t been in a rush to sign," Reiss writes. "One reason for Hopkins to wait a bit longer is to leave open the possibility of another team entering the mix, potentially increasing his market."

While the Patriots could still have a long way to go in this race, as Hopkins isn't expected to decide until possibly after the start of training camp, they don't want to fall completely out of contention.

Add in the possibility of another team getting involved come time for training camp, like the Buffalo Bills, and the Patriots would have an uphill battle.

Following their visit with Hopkins in recent weeks, the Patriots completed a couple of contract extensions that freed up more cap room in the short term. Both receiver DeVante Parker and inside linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley got new deals at a time when the Patriots were trending in the Hopkins sweepstakes.

So maybe that is a reason to take this latest odds shift with a grain of salt, as they have fluctuated since Hopkins became a free-agent.
