Jack Jones at Crossroads with Patriots After Latest Legal Woes
FOXBORO — New England Patriots cornerback Jack Jones appeared to have found his path to redemption along Route 1 in Massachusetts last season.
Following his sixth-round (No. 121 overall) selection out of Arizona State in the 2022 NFL Draft, the talented, yet troubled rookie was seemingly well on his way to establishing himself as a key component of the Pats defense, as well as laying the foundation for a promising NFL career.
The Arizona State product made his first career start in the Patriots' Week 4 game against the Green Bay Packers. In the first half, Jones had a forced fumble [which he recovered,] as well as a pick-six off then-Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Despite New England having dropped the overtime matchup 27-24, Jones became just the fourth player in NFL history to return an interception thrown by Rodgers for a touchdown, joining Tanard Jackson, William Jackson III, and Jamel Dean.
In Week 5 against the Detroit Lions, Jones recorded his second interception of the season off a throw by Jared Goff. Through the first five weeks, Jones was rated the number one cornerback in single coverage by Pro Football Focus, with a rating of 92.
In short, the Pats looked to have secured the services of yet another sixth-round steal.
Unfortunately, Jones' road to redemption has since become more turbulent.
For the Patriots, the question becomes whether his latest troubles are a step too far in the wrong direction.
New England's second-year corner is once again embroiled in legal difficulty following his arrest at Boston's Logan Airport on Friday for attempting to board an aircraft with two loaded firearms. The 25-year-old facing several charges including: possession of a concealed weapons in a secure area of an airport, possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large capacity feeding device, according to police.
While the ramifications of his Friday evening actions are serious enough on their own, they were not Jones' first brush with the law.
In 2018, Jones was arrested at a Panda Express in Santa Paula, California, for commercial burglary — a second-degree misdemeanor to which he pled guilty and served 45 days of house arrest. In fact, this transgression was the primary reason for his plummeting draft stock in 2022.
Jones also found his way into conflict with the Patriots organization during his rookie campaign. After being placed on injured reserve on Dec. 31 due to a left knee injury, the team suspended him for the final two games of the season for a violation of team rules regarding injury disclosure.
Based on the several blemishes on his resume, many have conjectured that Jones has worn out his welcome in Foxboro.
However, the reality is a bit cloudier than simply cutting ties.
In only one season, Jones caught the eye of many a Patriots fan with his high-octane style of play. Though slightly undersized for the position, at 5-11, 175 pounds, he became an aggressive presence on the perimeter. In 13 games [454 defensive snaps] as a rookie, Jones compiled 30 tackles, six passes-defensed, one forced fumble, one recovery and two interceptions, including one for a touchdown return.
Despite any lingering uncertainty regarding his suspension, and thus his standing with the team, Jones has bene one of New England's standout performers during their offseason workout program. Though legal punishments, as well as league discipline, may ultimately decide his fate on the field, New England must weigh several options before making their own decision on Jones' future with the club. It is important to remember that all facts regarding his case have yet to be disclosed -- a fact which the Pats acknowledged on Friday by issuing the following statement in the aftermath of Jones’ arrest:
“We have been notified that Jack Jones was arrested at Logan Airport earlier today. We are in the process of gathering more information and will not be commenting further at this time.”
Set to be arraigned next week at East Boston District Court, Jones undoubtedly hopes that he will have the chance to will once again get back on the road to atonement.
The Patriots, on the other hand, have a difficult decision to make — one which they are taking quite seriously.
One might say that both sides are at a crossroads. The prudent course of action is to tread lightly.
