Patriots' Jack Jones Court Appearance Rescheduled; New Date on Gun Charges?
New England Patriots' talented-but-troubled cornerback Jack Jones won't have to leave training camp this week after all, as his court appearance for gun-related charges scheduled for Friday has been rescheduled for Sept. 15.
According to NBC Sports Boston, the East Boston Municipal is pushing Jones' "probable cause" hearing back almost a month. That means that Jones can stay in Green Bay, where the Patriots are holding joint practices with the Packers ahead of Saturday night's preseason game at Lambeau Field.
Jones is expected to accompany the team to Green Bay Tuesday, with practices starting Wednesday. If the new court date stands, Jones would be forced to miss a Friday practice two days before the team's Week 2 home game against the Miami Dolphins, Sept. 17 on Sunday Night Football.
The mercurial Jones was arrested June 16 at Boston's Logan Airport for attempting to carry two loaded firearms onto a flight. He was arrested and charged with nine gun-related crimes and - if found guilty on all counts - could face as much as 30 years in prison.
He deflected questions about the incident recently at training camp, but did - sort of - address it in a recent social media post. In an Aug. 7 tweet, Jones said simply: "Time will tell it all"
True to his combustive DNA, Jones got into more trouble this year ... this one much less serious. He was kicked out of a camp practice after breaking up a pass but then getting into verbal altercations with teammates and coaches.
A sixth-round pick in 2022, Jones obviously possesses unique physical gifts. He made his first start last year in Week 4 at Lambeau and produced his "breakout" game. He forced a fumble (which he recovered), and later became just the fourth player to record of Pick Six of then-Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
In last week's preseason opener against the Houston Texans, Jones started at cornerback along with rookie Christian Gonzalez and wound up playing 36 snaps.
