New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has learned a lesson about the risks of gambling, even if just a friendly wager.

Jones watched closely as the Alabama Crimson Tide, his alma mater, took on the Texas Longhorns in the biggest college football game last weekend. Unfortunately for Jones, 'Bama faltered as the 'Horns pulled off an upset 34-24 victory in Tuscaloosa.

It's become quite common for NFL teammates to make friendly bets when their college teams square off, and as it turns out Jones got in on the fun by wagering with Patriots special teamer and former Longhorn Brendan Schooler. On Wednesday, Jones honored his losing bet by wearing Texas gear to the Patriots facility.

Jones enjoyed a prolific career at Alabama, leading the Crimson Tide to a national championship in 2020. In fact, Jones' 77.4 completion percentage in 2020 remains an NCAA single-season record, and he did it while throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. It's telling that despite the sheer talent on Alabama's roster, the Crimson Tide haven't reached the same heights since Jones left.

On the other hand, Schooler had a much more low-key career in college. The defensive back transferred from Oregon to Texas in 2020, and proceeded to start eight of 21 games he played over two seasons. He signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent last year, and was one of just two of them to make the team. Today, he's still on the 53-man roster as an important special teams player.

Jones, and Schooler by extension, also didn't have a great weekend at the professional level as the Patriots fell to the Philadelphia Eagles 25-20 in their season opener. Despite a solid individual performance from Jones, who completed 35 of 54 passes for 316 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, it wasn't enough to overcome an early 16-0 deficit.

Jones will get another reminder of his college days on Sunday when his Patriots square off against former Alabama quarterback and teammate Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins. This time around, Jones will be hoping for much better results than he got last week.
