Three-Peat: Patriots Make History Drafting QB?

If the New England Patriots become the third-straight team to select a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft, it'd mark the fourth time that it has ever been done.

Could all three top quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL Draft go off the board in the first three picks?

It has only been done three times in league history, with the most recent occurrence being in 2021 when Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, and Trey Lance were taken off the board.

And it is beginning to sound like a real possibility this year, according to respected draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah, who discussed the potential scenario in his recent media conference call ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine.

“I think if you’re the Chargers and you want to trade down, you’re praying that the fourth quarterback emerges from now to the draft,” Jeremiah said. “I think when it’s all said and done, it feels like to me that you’re going to have the three quarterbacks go 1, 2, 3 when we get down to it.

“Whether that’s New England taking one or either them or Washington trading out and somebody coming up. It just feels to me, talking to people around the league that seems to be the expectation.”

Even after public hints from first-year New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo that they were looking to select their next franchise signal-caller with the No. 3 pick, buzz about a potential trade has increased recently. In a recent report, the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings were both named as possible trade partners for New England.

Yet, even if the Patriots don't trade out of the No. 3 pick, it seems highly likely that both the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders will go with a quarterback. Unless Chicago ultimately decides to hang onto former first-round pick Justin Fields, seemingly becoming less of a possibility, then Jeremiah's scenario could play out.

If both the Bears and Commanders go quarterback at No. 1 and 2, respectively, then it'd be up to the Patriots as to what they do. If Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are off the board, do they select the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Jayden Daniels, or trade down and maybe look to improve elsewhere?

Those are likely all decisions being discussed in Foxboro as the Patriots have draft preparations in full swing.
