FOXBORO — As the New England Patriots attempt to even their record at 1-1 against the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium on Sunday night, self-inflicted wounds once again are making that task more difficult.

With the Patriots offense seemingly finding its groove, highly-touted Pats rookie Demario Douglas failed to secure the ball after making a 10-yard catch of a short-middle route pass from quarterback Mac Jones. Dolphins defender Bradley Chubb knocked the ball loose from Douglas' hands, only to be recovered by safety DeShon Elliott.

Taking over at their own 27-yard line, Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa led the Dolphins 73 yards on 11 plays, capped by an eight-yard touchdown rush by running back Raheem Mostert, giving the Dolphins a 10-0 lead.

New England's lost drive may have also been costly to their secondary, as cornerback Marcus Jones left the field with a shoulder injury and is questionable to return.

The Patriots find themselves in a double-digit first-half deficit for the second time in as many weeks. In Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Pats' first five drives of the game ended with a pick-six, a fumble that led to another Eagles touchdown, and three consecutive three-and-outs that added up to a 16-0 Philadelphia lead. New England lost the game 25-20.

The Patriots and Dolphins are facing off for the first of two meetings this season. The second game of the annual series will be played at Miami on Oct. 29. The two teams split the series in 2022, with the Patriots losing on opening day at Miami, 20-7, on Sept. 11 and then getting revenge with a 23-21 win at Gillette Stadium on Jan. 1.

While New England dropped its season-opener to the Eagles, Miami (1-0) parlayed an explosive offensive performance into a 36-34 come-from-behind win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

As was expected cornerback Jonathan Jones missed Sunday night's game with an ankle injury, while offensive linemen Trent Brown and Sidy Sow remain in concussion protocol. Starting guards Michael Onwenu and Cole Strange made their respective season debuts, after missing the Pats Week 1 loss to the Eagles.
