Christian Barmore To IR, Jake Bailey Status Revealed: Patriots-Jets Injury Report

The Patriots will be without a key member of their defense for Sunday’s Week 11 matchup with the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium.

FOXBORO — The New England Patriots and New York Jets have released their final injury and practice participation reports ahead of their Week 11 matchup.

The Pats and the Jets are set to square off on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium.

While many of New England’s ‘walking wounded’ have been removed from the Pats report since the conclusion of their bye week, a new wrinkle has emerged regarding the status of one of their specialists.

They will also be without the services of a key member of their defensive line for the foreseeable future.

Here is Friday afternoon’s full report:

What it means for the Patriots:

Having not played since suffering a knee injury in Week 6, defensive tackle Christian Barmore has officially been moved to injured reserve. He will now be forced to miss the next four weeks, before being eligible to return.

Practice squad center Kody Russey has been signed to the team’s 53-man roster to take his spot.

Through the Pats first six games, Barmore logged 15 total tackles (one for loss), three quarterback-hits and one sack. In his absence, New England has had to find alternative ways to account for his routinely absorbing the opponent’s double team. The team has relied on run-stuffers Davon Godchaux, Lawrence Guy, and Carl Davis while attempting to stop the run, with defensive end Deatrich Wise occasionally aligning as a base defensive end.

During their previous meeting with New York in Week 8, the Pats pressured Jets quarterback Zach Wilson on 41.9 percent of his drop-backs to force three interceptions without Barmore in the lineup. They will need to replicate that type of performance this weekend, as well as moving forward, to gain the win.

Though he is listed as ‘doubtful’ with a back injury, there is still a slight chance that punter Jake Bailey will play on Sunday. The 25-year-old has struggled this season; currently averaging 35.3 net yards per punt, which is last in the league among qualified punters. His five touchbacks rank second in the league. If he is unable to suit up, veteran Michael Palardy is likely to be a game day elevation via the practice squad.

Palardy was signed by the team in early November, after participating in a workout for the Pats at Gillette Stadium. the 30-year old joined the NFL as an undrafted rookie out of the University of Tennessee in 2014. He has made with the then-Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams as well as the Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins. Through 72 career games, Palardy has booted 321 punts, averaging 45.2 yards per punt. His career long of 65-yards was set last season as a member of the Dolphins in 20-9 win over the New York Giants, His performance earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

In positive news for the Pats, cornerback Jonathan Jones (illness), safety Kyle Dugger (ankle), and defensive lineman DaMarcus Mitchell (illness) were removed from the report.

NEW YORK JETS (6-3)

OUT
DT Sheldon Rankins - Elbow (DNP)
WR Corey Davis - Knee (DNP)

DOUBTFUL
TE Kenny Yeboah - Calf (DNP)

QUESTIONABLE
G Nate Herbig - Shin (LP)

What it means for the Jets:

After suffering a knee injury in Week 7, Davis missed the Jets’ first meeting with the Pats during Week 8. The 27-year-old has logged 19 catches, 351 yards, two touchdowns) in seven games played.

In his stead, rookie Garrett Wilson has seen the majority of quarterback Zack Wilson’s passes. The 10th overall selection in the 2022 Draft leads the team with 42 catches for 521 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson will once again be quarterback Zack Wilson’s top target this weekend.

Wideout Elijah Moore will assuredly see more targets against the Patriots, as well. Moore has caught 16 passes for 203 yards thus far in 2022. New England’s secondary will still face challenges from New York’s pair of pass-catches, even with Davis on the shelf for Sunday.
