Jets' Coach Explains 'Do Your Job' Mocking of Patriots

New York Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ublrich insists that his recent comments on HBO's "Hard Knocks" were not a slight towards the New England Patriots

The New England Patriots and New York Jets don't need any reason to hate each other more than they already do, but some extra fuel to the fire never hurts.

Recently, Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ublrich seemingly gave the Patriots that extra heat. On the premiere of HBO's Hard Knocks, Ulbrich addressed his defense with the phrase "Do Your Job," which the Patriots famously used during their Super Bowl-winning years

"It's the mantra of our defense: Make a motherf***er earn every yard," Ulbrich said. “Do my job, is that good enough? F*** no. That's the rest of the NFL, isn't it? 'Do your job. Do your job.' F*** that. Do your job, then now what? If we all do our job and a f***ing little bit more, that's 22 (players) playing."

With the Jets seemingly adopting the phrase for themselves, Patriots fans quickly took notice. However, Ulbrich insists that his comments were not a jab at the Patriots, and if anything, it was the exact opposite.

“First of all, it had zero reference to the Patriots," Ulbrich said. "If anything, it’s paying an homage to the Patriots. ... Do your job first, and that’s huge. But then when you’ve got 11 guys that’s not enough."

Ulbrich clearly knows better than to mess with the Patriots. Before joining the Jets in 2021, he was an assistant coach for the Atlanta Falcons team that infamously lost Super Bowl LI against the Patriots in spectacular fashion. On that day, Ulbrich saw firsthand how scary the Patriots are when they "do their job."

Even if Ulbrich insists that his comments weren't directed at the Patriots, the situation could still lead to some added tension when the teams meet in Week 3 at MetLife Stadium.
