Patriots Work Out, But Haven't Signed Former First-Round Pick: 'I Just Want a Chance!'

Former first-round pick D.J. Fluker hasn't played in the NFL since 2020, but could he be the New England Patriots next addition?
In this story:

The New England Patriots have been among the most busy NFL teams this offseason.

From bringing in Bill O'Brien as offensive coordinator, signing a plethora of free agents, to landing draft "steal" in cornerback Christian Gonzalez, the Patriots are ready to leave last season behind them.

And adding much-needed offensive line depth could be the cherry on top. Earlier this week, the Patriots brought in former first-round D.J Fluker for a work out.

After being taken No. 11 in the 2014 NFL Draft by the then San Diego Chargers originally as a right tackle, Fluker jumped in at guard but never lived up to expectations - leading to his release in May 2017.

Following his four seasons on the Chargers, Fluker bounced around the league, playing short stints with the New York Giants (2017), Seattle Seahawks (2018-2019) and Baltimore Ravens (2020).

However, that season in Baltimore proved to be the final time he'd play an NFL down. Despite signing with a trio of teams in 2021 (Miami Dolphins, Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars), the Alabama product never saw the field.

A big reason why he struggled to suit up is due to weight issues, reportedly coming in at over 340 pounds in his playing days. But according to Schultz' report the ex-Crimson Tide tackle has lost over 40 pounds and appears to be in much better shape.

“I just want a chance!” Fluker said.

With 108 games to his resume - including 98 starts - the 32-year-old could add much needed experience to this New England offensive line. Especially second-year guard and 2022 first-round draft pick Cole Strange, who went through an up-and-down rookie campaign and could use a mentor such as Fluker.

Despite adding longtime veteran Riley Reiff in the offseason, the Patriots and quarterback Mac Jones could always use added protection and depth for this revamped unit.

With a projected starting lineup of Strange, Reiff, Trent Brown, David Andrews and Michael Onwenu, Fluker would likely slot into the second unit if the Patriots put the pen to paper.

After the workout, however, New England has yet to sign him.
