Patriots' Josh Uche Chooses QB: Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe?

Following a down year in 2022, New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has been the center of rumors throughout the offseason.

At this time last year, it wasn't a debate as to the best quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Heading into his rookie season tasked with being the successor to longtime New England Patriot Tom Brady, Mac Jones  did not disappoint. Leading New England to a 10-7 mark and playoff appearance, Jones was given a Pro Bowl nod for his 3,801-yard, 22-touchdown season.

However, heading into 2022 with new offensive coordinator in Matt Patricia, the second-year signal caller experienced a down year in every form. And following the conclusion of the season, there have been no shortage of rumors circulating to whether Jones is the quarterback of the future in Foxborough.

Will it be Bailey Zappe? Who stepped in for Jones when he went down with a high ankle sprain for three games. Or will the Patriots spend an early draft pick on a new face? Such as Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson who NBC Sports projected New England selecting at No. 14.

But Patriots linebacker Josh Uche fully supports his third-year quarterback, crediting Jones' work ethic in his ability to lead the offense.

"When it comes to Mac, I love Mac. I mean, he's a competitor. Somebody who I've gone to war with and practiced with," Uche said. "I've seen his work ethic and his tenacity. I think he's a dog. That's me personally, having worked with Mac and knowing what I know about him. Listen, he's a dog. That's all I can say, man. He's our quarterback."

Uche, who enjoyed a career-year in 2022, noted the decision ultimately falls on the coaching staff.

"At the end of the day, it's up to coach Belichick to make the best decision for the team," Uche said. "My job is to be a player. To go out there and do my job. So, leaving the coaching decisions up to them, that's kind of what helped me focus more."

Uche is not the first player to back Jones, with multiple others stating their disappoint in the rumors and noise surrounding their 2023 campaign.
