How Do Patriots’ ‘Triplets’ Rank Among NFL Offenses?
While the term "triplets" in the NFL didn't originate from the New England Patriots, they've still had some of the best in NFL history.
Granted, most have Tom Brady behind center, but the seven-time Super Bowl champions' dominance at quarterback elevated nearly every player around him. From Corey Dillon, to Antowain Smith, the Patriots had 10 different players lead the team in rushing from 2001-19. Add him tossing to the likes of Rob Gronkowski, Wes Welker and Julian Edelman, and these New England offenses led by Brady were nearly impossible to contain.
However, with Brady long gone and third-year quarterback Mac Jones at quarterback, Rhamondre Stevenson at running back and JuJu Smith-Schuster at receiver, the Patriots look to replicate that offensive dominance once again. Coming in at No. 27 in CBS Sports "triplet" rankings, the trio slotted above the Atlanta Falcons but just below the Carolina Panthers.
"Had Matt Patricia not been in charge of New England's offense last season, I think the Pats would probably be in the next tier, rather than sitting way down here," CBS Sports writes. "Mac Jones took such a significant step back a year ago that it's tough to place New England much higher than this, but Stevenson is a stud and Smith-Schuster is at least a semi-reliable slot target. Perhaps after a year under Bill O'Brien, the Patriots can take a step forward."
Following a season under Patricia, New England welcomes O'Brien in hopes of getting Jones back to Pro Bowl form. And if the longtime offensive coordinator knows a thing or two, it's leading those aforementioned Patriots dynasties.
