Jets' Garrett Wilson on Patriots' Domination: 'Time For Change!'
Death, taxes, and the New England Patriots beating the New York Jets. It certainly feels that way, doesn’t it?
The Patriots will visit MetLife Stadium on Sunday to take on the Jets, who are still reeling from the loss of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Their Super Bowl expectations have taken a nosedive and, for now, they’ll look to win games with an elite defense doing the heavy lifting.
For a winless New England team, New York is a get-right game. They are winners of 14 consecutive contests, and 22 of the last 24, against the Jets.
Obviously, head coach Bill Belichick has played a large role in that conquest. Every year, his defense is a buzzsaw for young quarterbacks looking to get their bearings in the league. Unfortunately for the Jets, that means quarterback Zach Wilson will be thrown into the fire yet again.
However, this matchup won’t solely be decided on the merits of Wilson’s performance. New York receiver Garrett Wilson and cornerback Sauce Gardner have helped reshape this roster, winning their respective rookie of the year awards. They headline a roster that, even without Rodgers, is still capable of beating good teams—like their 22-16 win over the Buffalo Bills.
Wilson, the receiver, spoke on “Bart and Hahn” about facing the Patriots.
“It’s time that things change around here,” Wilson said. “Fourteen straight is unacceptable. That’s unacceptable. I’m 0-2 against them. That’s unacceptable.”
His work will be cut out for him. New England’s defense is still to be feared, despite falling to the Miami Dolphins, 24-17, on Sunday Night Football. Rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez was Pro Football Focus’ top-graded rookie from Week 2’s action. Safety Kyle Dugger and edge rusher Matthew Judon are both stars in their own right.
“We haven’t beaten the Patriots,” Wilson continued. “I feel like that’s why they brought me here, brought me and Sauce and the guys here—to make things like that change. It’s time we do what we get paid for.”
For now, New York remains an underdog, and for good reason. Sports Illustrated Sportsbook has New England favored by 2.5 points, but a total of 36.5 reveals how anemic these offenses may look on Sunday.
Defenses are expected to win the day. Shutting down Wilson and limiting turnovers against a hungry Jets unit could go a long way in cementing yet another divisional win.
