Raiders' Antonio Pierce Talks QB Gardner Minshew II
The 2024 NFL Owners' Meetings is being held in Tampa Bay, Florida this week. Our Hondo Carpenter Sr. is there providing the latest Las Vegas Raiders information and coverage.
In this 2024 NFL free agency, the Raiders signed fifth-year veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew II to a two-year deal. Minshew brings competition, leadership, and a crucial veteran role to the Raiders' quarterback room.
Raiders Coach Antonio Pierce shared his thoughts on Minshew's signing and his impressions of the fifth-year veteran when he addressed the media at the NFL Owners' Meetings on Monday.
"He beat us, let's start there," Pierce said. "He's a competitor; we want that room to be as competitive as possible. Aidan [O'Connell] did a hell of a job last year, but like any other position on our team, we want it to make that as competitive as possible.
"One thing about Gardner, as you've seen throughout his career, is that he finds a way, so that's going to make our room better. He's been through a lot of adversity, and you want that experience as well. To me, it was a good fit, and it's a culture fit. Wild boy right there, and I like the personality."
Minshew has played 49 career games, completed 891 passes on 1,423 attempts for 9,937 yards, and thrown 59 touchdown passes.
In the Raiders' 2023-24 Week 16 contest against the Indianapolis Colts, Minshew, who was the Colts' quarterback at the time, threw 15 completions on 23 attempts for 224 yards and one touchdown. The Colts went on to win the game 23-20, and Minshew finished with a quarterback rating of 111.5.
