How Jakobi Meyers can Take His Game to Another Level in 2024
Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers enjoyed arguably the best season of his career in 2023.
While he did not post a career-high in receiving yards, he still had 71 receptions for 807 yards and eight touchdowns, which was a career-high. Meyers was a favorite target of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo early on, and his volume did not drop much when Aidan O’Connell took over as the starter.
Meyers proved he can be a major factor in the Raiders’ offensive game plan. The team will again lean on him to be a reliable target in 2024 as they push for the postseason.
But do the Raiders need more out of Meyers to make that happen? They just might. Meyers was excellent last season, but there may still be more to his game than what Raider Nation saw in 2023.
Offensively, the Raiders are fairly set in all elements of attacking the field. They can run the ball with speed or power. They have receivers who can catch the ball over the middle and secure first downs, but they don’t have a sure thing as a field stretcher. Tre Tucker showed flashes last season but will have to be more consistent with more snaps in 2024.
In the meantime, Meyers could try to fill that role. He has never been much of a burner in his career – his average target depth has never been higher than 10.3 yards – but he showed some flashes of catching deep balls down the field later in the season.
Meyers is a savvy route runner. He does not necessarily have the speed to beat players downfield, but separating from defensive backs is about more than just speed. He gets open with great footwork and a deceptive head fake. He could become a field stretcher if the Raiders wanted to dial up more deep shots for him.
Meyers was not used often on end-arounds or designed runs, but when he was, he produced. He had just four attempts but had 24 yards and two touchdowns. The Raiders could opt to use Meyers in multiple ways next season.
The Raiders want to be a postseason team in 2024. They can achieve this goal by unlocking more elements of Meyers’ game.
The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
