One of the most-hyped awards given at the end of each NFL season is the NFL AP Defensive Rookie of the Year. The honor has been awarded each season since 1967, with one award provided to the top offensive player and one to the top defensive player.
In 2022, New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner won the award on the defensive side of the ball. This year, there are several uniquely talented defensive players that are sure to battle for AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

Defensive Rookie of the Year Favorites Featuring Jalen Carter
There are currently three players who hold betting odds shorter than (+1000) to win AP Defensive Rookie of the Year: Houston Texans DE Will Anderson Jr. (+350), Philadelphia Eagles DT Jalen Carter (+600) and Las Vegas Raiders DE Tyree Wilson (+750).
While other players – including New England Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez and Seattle Seahawks CB Devon Witherspoon – hold odds in the same ballpark as the three front-runners, Anderson, Carter and Wilson are considered a tier of their own.
EDGE/DE Will Anderson Jr. was selected by the Houston Texans with the third overall selection of the 2023 NFL Draft. Over three seasons (41 games played) at Alabama, Anderson Jr. recorded 115 solo tackles (204 total), 58.5 TFL, 34.5 sacks, a forced fumble and an interception (which he returned for a touchdown).
He was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year twice in 2021 and 2022, selected as a unanimous first-team All-American in 2021 and 2022, won a National Championship in 2020 and received both the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the latter of which he won twice.
He will likely step into a starting role with Houston and has shown the ability to be an elite producer at every level, making him the favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2023.
DT Jalen Carter was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles with the ninth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. Carter is a physically imposing defensive lineman who stands at 6’3” and weighs 310 pounds; he won two National Championships with Georgia and was a unanimous first-team All-American in 2021.
Rounding out the list of favorites is DE Tyree Wilson, who was selected seventh overall by the Las Vegas Raiders in this year’s NFL Draft. After beginning his collegiate career at Texas A&M, Wilson transferred to Texas Tech where he became a starter in his first year with the team. He led the Red Raiders in tackles as a redshirt junior and was a first-team All-American selection in his redshirt senior season.

Defensive Rookie of the Year Predictions & Futures Picks: Who Will Win?
Based on the betting odds currently available at FanDuel Sportsbook, oddsmakers seem to think Will Anderson Jr. has a significant edge over the rest of the Defensive Rookie of the Year field. The second-shortest odds holder – Jalen Carter at (+600) – holds odds nearly twice as long as Anderson Jr.’s.
Anderson Jr. entered the draft as an EDGE rusher, which is somewhat of an inexact term. It is typically considered a hybrid position that is focused on pressuring the quarterback above all else. While EDGE rushers can perform other duties, such as run-stopping, they are primarily focused on pass-rushing.
Anderson Jr. typically lined up as an outside linebacker in college; however, the Houston Texans have announced that Anderson Jr. will move to defensive end. We think this is a better fit for Anderson Jr.’s skill set and will only serve to increase his chances of winning AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
For his part, Anderson Jr. seems excited about the position change and says that he worked as a traditional defensive end in practice at Alabama. Instead of playing straight up in the second level, Anderson Jr. will now start in a three-point stance, allowing him to leverage his explosiveness that much more efficiently.
At Alabama, Anderson Jr. recorded 34.5 sacks in just 41 games; if he can come even close to that pace, he’ll be a shoo-in for the award and cash on his (+350) futures odds.
